Wi-Fi Nights Game Suggestions Guide

08 November 2008 - 10:48 AM

After spending a few months in the official #GBATemp-WiFi IRC channel, I have noticed that many members have shown a level of unawareness about all of the games that are quite enjoyable over Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection. At times, they are not clear what each game offers in terms of gameplay. There is plenty of games out there for players to enjoy with little to no offline playtime beforehand. I thought I would take a little time and provide everyone more in-depth information about all that you can do. This guide will be updated as future releases are available. Also, I will try to confine the games within the English-speaking world, unless a game is quite friendly to Western eyes or has a translation patch available.

Game types that will not be listed:
· Those that solely involve uploading or downloading high scores.
· Titles that simply offer exchanging level designs, such as Mario Vs. Donkey Kong 2, Mechanic Master, etc.
· Monster collection games, such as the core Pokémon titles, Digimon, etc.
· Card battle games, including Yu-Gi-Oh!, Marvel, Fullmetal, etc.
· Mega Man Star Force series. While it offers co-op, it requires many hours of play, which is not for casual gaming.
· The Castlevania games, as they are for shopping or unlocking a few items after long, offline play sessions.
· The Disney games, as they give you bonus customizations for your Dgamer Avatar (at Disney.com).
· Communication-based functionality, such as Diary Girl or Final Fantasy III.

The reason why I'm not listing the monster collection or card battle games is that these games are obvious as well as they do not offer a leveled playing field between new players and veterans. While they offer some great online entertainment, this guide's goal is to offer the best options for most anyone to simply pick up and play. The rest are too minor or insignificant in regards of value for internet play.

NOTE: This list is obviously incomplete, because it will take a bit of time to detail all of the games presently available. Please, no comments about "why is (insert game) not listed?" or any parallel responses. They will be added, as I work upon this guide. Once again, there is a LOT to input, so your patience is appreciated.

REQUEST: Some titles, as listed at the List of Nintendo DS Wi-Fi Connection Games at Wikipedia, do not have clear information as to what exactly the online portions of each games contains. If you want to contribute, as some have asked since I've started, then contact me in the Official #GBATemp.net IRC Channel for details. Please understand that help is needed for the more obscure games, not the popular titles, such as Clubhouse Games or Tetris DS.

G6 DS Real USB Reader

08 November 2008 - 03:59 AM

Several months ago, my reader (the solid black casing version similar to what is pictured) died. The card is fine, as I had it tested with another local owner, so let's not go off point about this fact. I'm not certain as to what exactly is wrong with the reader. The information about malfunctions is vague and scattered across many forums. I'm trying to learn from anyone who has personally suffered this defect as to how it could be solved or fixed.

There is also another solution possible that I've been told. There is an off-market clone of the G6 Real that uses the same, exact reader. I presently cannot find the product's name or where it is sold. If I could find out what it is, perhaps I could contact a vendor of it and seek ordering a reader from one. Also, if anyone here has a "spare" reader (your G6 Real having died and what not), then I may be interested in speaking with you in private about procuring yours for my use.

Before anyone asks, I do not have any plans to sell my G6 DS Real once fixing or replacing my reader. Thanks in advance for any worthwhile input into this matter.

NEO·DS Conversion Guide

16 October 2008 - 02:45 AM

WARNING: It has been brought to my attention that MAMEDEV, the team that is owed thanks for the wonderful emulator, has been updating the NEO·GEO sets in recent updates. So, if your MAME ROMs are current, then you may find some games not working whatsoever. Hopefully, the upcoming v.2.1 (no date announced) will mirror those changes. Please heed this warning should you experience any non-working games.

Thought I'd toss a helpful guide on how to use NEO·DS in here, since it's been asked before, and the tutorials that I've found do not really show much. Here's how it goes. Also, do NOT ask where to acquire any ROMs. This act alone violates GBATemp's policies. As with DS and GBA ROMs, they too are protected by copyright laws. Thefefore, you may not legally possess any ROMs unless you physically possess the MVS cartridge(s) of the games that you wish to run using NEO·DS.

1. Download and extract the NEO·DS download somewhere you can remember. You can get the latest version (v.2.0 at the time of writing this guide) here.
2. You need to have the latest and complete MAME ROM set(s) in zipped form. Make certain that they are named correctly beforehand by the official build of MAME's standards, not NeoRAGEx or another emulator's compatible set.
3. In the folder, /NeoDS/NeoDSConvert/, copy the neogeo.zip within and leave it there. Do not decompress.
4. Copy the ROM you want to convert into the same folder. Again, do not decompress.
5. Using Command Prompt, navigate to the directory and type the following:

neodsconvert -biosX romname

Example: neodsconvert -bios3 cyberlip

X is the variable for which region you want the ROM to be. Here's what they are:

0 = Europe MVS (Ver. 2)
1 = Europe MVS (Ver. 1)
2 = US MVS (Ver. 2?)
3 = US MVS (Ver. 1)
4 = Asia MVS (Ver. 3)
5 = Japan MVS (Ver. 3)
6 = Japan MVS (Ver. 2)
7 = Japan MVS (Ver. 1)
8 = Universe Bios*
9 = Debug MVS*
10 = Asia AES*
11 = Japan AES*

NOTE: Not all BIOS files, such as the Universe BIOS, are in the official MAME's neogeo.zip. You will have to look elsewhere for those files should you wish to use them. You will need to add them into the neogeo.zip prior to converting.

NOTE: If you are trying to convert a title that is a clone (different version, bootleg, hack) of a game (ex. SNK vs. CAPCOM SVC CHAOS Super Plus (bootleg)), you need to have both the parent ROM (svc.zip) and the clone (svcsplus.zip) in the directory. To find out which are parents and clones, go here.

6. A new file, romname.neo will have been created.
7. Repeat as you deem fit for other games.
8. When done converting, copy the file, neods.ds and the .neo file(s) to the root of your flash memory.

NOTE: If your flash card does not possess automatic DLDI patching, do so before you copy neods.ds onto your memory.

9. Play!

NOTE: Not all games are running perfectly, as the author has stated this before. Also, if a game isn't working after conversion, try a different BIOS setting.

I hope this helps anyone having issues with conversion and operation.

DS - GBA Linkage Guide

30 September 2008 - 01:56 PM

Recently, I was prompted by friends to show them which DS games have the DS - GBA Linkage options. For those who are unaware, having cooresponding games provides bonuses within certain DS titles. I was a bit disheartened to find that the Wikipedia entry for them had been deleted. Whether this had been done due to the entry's long history without updates or malice on the part of an immature child, this information is still useful, considering the DS is recognized as the top handheld unit on the market today. I have taken it upon myself to recompile the privledges of owning both games, so let's get to it, shall we?

ADVICE: For best results, linkage should be between two games of the same region. To ensure your game cartridges match, check the serial numbers on the cartridges' labels. The region should be a part of each.

REQUEST: Should any cross-region games work or game pairings not listed which produce results, please feel free to respond WITH EVIDENCE. Word-of-mouth or a vague reference of a post from some random person in some forum are unacceptable. If you don't understand the concept of evidence, then don't bother contributing any data.
