I've never traded stuff in, the oldest game I have is Treasure Island Dizzy for the Atari ST. Not really sure why I've kept it, I don't even have anything it'll run on

Assuming you have wireless internet at home, if you only use market/play store while connected to Wifi and turn off all automatic updates it won't charge you 
As the others said, on the phone if you go into the "Settings>Accounts and Sync" menu and add your google account then it should pick your phone up just fine. Untick the sync boxes if you don't want it to automatically pick up contacts/calendar/email info and you're sorted.
