Inside Xbox Dead

We want to express our sincere appreciation to all of our viewers and fans of Inside Xbox, and remain committed to providing our members with access to high-quality news and information via the console, social media channels and Xbox.com. We will be leveraging third-party news and video content available through a variety of existing and future partners, and supplementing this content with select first-party offerings. However, day-to-day news content and weekly programming currently offered though Inside Xbox will cease production in the United States. This includes shows like Major’s Minute, Featured Videos and Insider Moves packaged under the Inside Xbox brand.

This has been known in the US for a week or so but the EU team was still deciding. Last night it was announced that Xbox EU would also be stopping production of Inside Xbox content.

Fans of the service are getting very angry with Microsoft about this. In the UK the Inside Xbox content was always fun and obviously made by those who loved what they did. Microsoft say they are doing this as a cost cutting measure. They will now only take free content to stream on the Xbox from 3rd parties (i.e. trailers for new games, adverts, IGN vids etc.). Just reading the comments in Major Nelson's blog its obvious that the Xbox Live community is incensed by this. They're looking at their Gold subscriptions and wondering just where that money is now going. We don't see any reduced Arcade prices, or if we do they're not advertised and our dashboards are dominated by ads instead of the content we wish to access or have bought and now Inside Xbox has disappeared completely. If Microsoft cites falling views as part of the reasons for choosing to axe it to save money we can point squarely at the latest dashboard update which hid the Inside Xbox area to a small button, and even once you were in there it was confusing to navigate.
Curse you Micro$oft.

Quick Java Coding Question

28 March 2012 - 09:23 PM

I'm a first year Computer Science student and I've been given a very simple project to improve a Fox and Rabbit simulation. Its basically a grid of Fox and Rabbit object, foxes eat rabbits, breed and die, rabbits just breed and die. The basic running of the program has been provided to me. Basically it originally just consists of a window with no controls with the view of the field showing all the Fox and Rabbit objects.

Anyway I've coded a simple GUI to control the program and have hit upon a very strange snag. The window is, for some reason, not showing each step as it happens. When I click the button I have coded to run the simulation for 500 steps the program skips straight to the end of the series of steps instead of showing the populations changing over time. I've checked the code for the simulator viewer and there is a repaint method used to redraw the window after each step of the simulation and when i called the system from a main method the window showed the program running through each step. I don't understand how that's any different to me pressing a GUI button to call the same method. Any ideas as to what's going on?

Restoring GRUB2/BURG

02 March 2012 - 11:10 PM

So I just installed the Windows 8 preview on my computer and, of course, its stomped all over my BURG bootloader. Can't boot into my Ubuntu 11.10 install at all. I really should've thought of this beforehand tbh.
So, my question is thus: How do I reinstall GRUB so I can access all my OSes without fully reinstalling Ubuntu?

Windows Update being stupid

14 January 2012 - 03:31 PM

My Windows Update seems to have glitched slightly over a .NET Framework 4 security update. (Update no. KB2656351). According to my update history the update has installed correctly 9 times but still appears in my important updates queue every time I turn on my computer.
Any ideas on how do rectify this problem?

Wrong Banner on the Portal?

30 November 2011 - 04:28 PM

So I just logged into GBATemp right now and the new posts column is huge. I think the wrong banner ads have found their way onto the main page. If this is supposed to be like this, any chance of a change?
