As much as I hate Metro they weren't THIS stupid in their design of the interface. If you go back to the start menu and launch another program the one before it is still running. Move your mouse to the top left corner of the screen then drag down the side. You will see all background programs including the Desktop if you launched it.
I know that the App is still there because I use Win8 by myself. The App is still running, but when it isn't on the screen the whole App it gets suspended after 5 seconds in which the App has time to save it's state. If it's not done in 5 seconds the App get's killed. Microsoft says it's because "Energy Saving" things. -.-
What? No, of course not! Its preview may not be updated but unless it was made to pause when its window is not active, it most certainly does not pause. Previous Windows editions also had only one active window.
Read it by yourself: http://blogs.msdn.co...style-apps.aspx

You'll notice that it says "usually" in that article. This implies that there is probably a way to make it continue running in the background if it needs to. Its unlikely you're ever going to need this though except for something like Skype if it gets a Metro version.
Since all the Apps are fullscreen you're never going to be working on more than one at any point so it acts like, for instance, the iOS task switcher. Only certain processes will ever be truly "running" in the background .The rest merely have their states saved to be called back quickly from RAM at any point. Compare this to a windowed OS where you might have more than one window open side by side and be working on both at the same time nd you can see the difference. Even then what Foxi4 said applies. If the app doesn't need to be running while you're in another window it will likely be going to sleep. The difference in Metro is that you don't see this sleep-state program open the entire time as it is hidden away. Its like having a minimised program you're not using.

I would ay that we have gone drastically off-topic though. Possibly this thread requires a split somewhere along the line?

The idea is that it proves that we could privatise spaceflight without fears. We don't necessarily need NASA to have a new ship, we could pay other people to send our astronauts up. With that companies will compete to have the cheapest. They might even apply to set up their own Space Stations and astronaut training facilities that researchers could pay to use. It would have to be heavily regulated by NASA but its a possibility. This is only the start.

There's already talk of mining asteroids using robots which is a big incentive for companeis. They can make money off actual raw materials rather than just charging for a service.

There is a good example that Metro can be good for PC's: The newly released Github for Windows. Even if it's not a Metro application and for Windows 7 and XP too, it features a Metro-like design which is IMO the best use for Metro designed Apps out there so far. What really bugs me about Metro is the missing of Multitasking. If you want to make a Metro-Video-Converter you don't have Multi-tasking which means the App must remain open during the conversion progress. The only exception is your Default-Browser, and only the Default-Browser. If you want to switch to another Browser you have to change your default Browser. Come on Microsoft what on Earth have you thought by doing this? :(

I see large out of courst settlements.

Stuff like this really needs to stop. If there's a bloody patent issue call it up when the product FIRST LAUNCHES! Not a year or so in when its made some money you can claim back! Its complete bullshit that companies can pull stunts like this.
