Running a server for local access

10 May 2012 - 05:37 PM

I want to setup a server on my (Windows) PC that can be accessed over my local WiFi network. [The reason for this is so I can have a script set to screenshot my computers screen every few seconds and put it on the server, then have an auto-refreshing HTML page which I can view on my tablet to display the image taken - at the moment I am using Dropbox, but that means each image takes time to upload to Dropbox and also unnecessarily consumes bandwidth]. The problem is I don't really know much about servers etc. I tried to setup Micro Apache, but got confused about how to set it up.

Basically what I would like is if someone can point me in the direction of a decent tutorial for setting up and configuring a server (I don't care what software it is, as long as it works and is free), or easier to set up software?

Raspberry Pi $35 computer launched

Quote

Six years after the project's inception, we’re nearly at the end of our first run of development – although it’s just the beginning of the Raspberry Pi story. Now we start developing educational tools and initiatives, at the same time as continuing research and development on Raspberry Pi hardware.

Although we are still waiting for units to arrive from China, you can start buying the Raspberry Pi today. We have entered into licensed manufacture partnerships with two British companies, Premier Farnell and RS Components. They’ll be manufacturing and distributing the devices on behalf of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, and handling the distribution of our first batches as they arrive in the country. The Foundation continues to make a small profit from each Raspberry Pi sold, which we’ll be putting straight back into the charity.

Surprised no one posted about this yet...Anyway, seems it was available for sale from two different sites, but both were hammered by huge demand and it seems both have sold out of their stock. Apparently the next batch will be in a few months.

To anyone who doesn't know what the Raspberry Pi is, it is a small computer, built on a board the size of a credit card, available for $35. Despite having only officially launched today, various demos of the technology have been floating round the internet for a while. Here's a few YouTube videos to show what it can do:

And an article about some stuff it can do: here

Forums more "spaced out"?

I've noticed that the gap between thread titles (or rather, the gap "around" thread titles) has suddenly grown. Is there any way to put it back or is this some sort of bug?

Here's what I mean:

Netflix: Better via channel or PlayOn?

15 January 2012 - 01:56 PM

So Netflix just launched in the UK, and I was trying it on my Wii yesterday. The only problem is, my connection is pretty slow. So I left it paused for a while to buffer. But it seems that it can only buffer about 5 minutes or so like that, maybe some limitation of the Wii. So I was wondering, does it work better via PlayOn? For example if you pause the video, will it buffer the whole thing if you leave it long enough?

EDIT: Nevermind, I tried it and PlayOn doesn't work with Netflix in the UK. (At least, not yet anyway)

Guide(s) for optimizing individual ISOs?

13 January 2012 - 06:15 PM

I've been ripping my UMDs to ISOs and using UMD Gen to try and get the file sizes down a bit, but pretty much all I've been able to do in most is delete the Update. And I deleted the extra languages in one. But I feel there's bound to be more I can do, because the file sizes are still pretty big. I have heard using CSOs is not recommended, so I have kept them all as ISOs. But is there somewhere I can find lists of what files I can remove/dummy from specific games to decrease their file size?
