Pikmin 2 and Mario Power Time coming to US Wiis on June 10th

14 May 2012 - 03:33 PM

Among a library of Gamecube games re-released for the Wii as part of their "New Play Control" range in 2009, one title has been noticeably absent from the selection in the US, Pikmin 2. Where all territories received New Play Control releases of the first Pikmin title, for some reason America were denied their release of Pikmin 2.

Regarded as one of the best Gamecube games, Pikmin 2 is one of the most collectable titles, being hard to obtain and somewhat pricey. North American fans will now be able to get the game for the Wii much more easily, for an affordable $20. Pikmin 2 will have the same New Play Control features, using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to control the game, and with improved graphics and widescreen support not found in the original.

Along with Pikmin 2, Mario Power Tennis is also coming to the Nintendo Selects range for $20, as well as Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and Donkey Kong Country Returns for $30.

These four titles will be joining the Nintendo Selects Range in America on June 10th

Mum's computer had an improper shutdown, now it runs like crap

27 April 2012 - 02:53 PM

I'm trying to figure out what the hell has gone wrong with my mother's computer. Just a week ago her friend impulsively hit the power button and forced a total shutdown when the system suddenly came out of sleep mode, and since then there's been plenty of issues with the system.

Simply logging onto Windows can take a very long time, as does starting up any new programs. Even task manager is prone to becoming unresponsive.
Virus and malware scans suggests no infection, Windows Experience Index has not decreased after re-assessment (it was actually better).
The gist of it is that things are abormally slow, I took a look in the Event Viewer and events are the improper shutdown a week ago are quite concerning.

In particular, this computer is one of those computers built into a touch-screen display, and uses laptop/mobile hardware.

The thing that kicked this all off was the Critical Kernal-power error on Thursday 19th at 9pm.
"The previous system shutdown at 21:14:06 on ‎19/‎04/‎2012 was unexpected."
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
When that happened, the computer was running a game, she had lost all her game progress as a result of the power-off.

After that, a new Error event "atapi" shows up frequently after booting up, multiple times.
"The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0."

This is coupled with other troubling events that didn't show up prior to the improper shutdown, some examples, spoilered for length.
Warning! Spoiler inside.

The general gist I'm getting from this is that the improper shutdown may have screwed up the primary harddrive. I don't think an actual diskcheck has been run though, since it requires restarting Windows and Mum hasn't had the patience to do that yet.
I'm going to try running CHKDSK as the last Event suggests and see if the system doesn't improve.

I guess ultimately though all I'm asking for with this thread is any opinions you have of the situation, if anybody's been in a similar position.

Stricken retailer Game Group, which went into administration last week, has been given a new lease of life by investment firm OpCapita. The firm will acquire Game's UK assets, retain its remaining 333 UK stores and safeguard more than 3,200 jobs.

OpCapita has "no plans for any further store closures", the company said in a statement on Sunday, and will seek to rehire a "small number" of staff made redundant from Game's head office last week.

Former Halfords Group chief executive David Hamid, now a partner at OpCapita, has been appointed chairman of Game. A chief executive is expected to be named shortly. Ian Shepherd held the role until last week, when he resigned with immediate effect after a two-year battle to turn the company around.

OpCapita acquired electrical retailer Comet from its owner Kesa Electricals last year for a nominal sum of £2. The financial terms of its Game acquisition have not been disclosed, but it is thought to have paid a nominal sum and taken on the company's debts.

The UK operations of the video games retailer, which trades under the Game and Gamestation names, were taken over by administrator PricewaterhouseCoopers a week ago after overexpansion and competition from online gaming companies left the business unable to pay its creditors.

Game owed £85m to six banks, including RBS, Barclays and HSBC. The lenders made an offer for the company in the hope of recovering some of the debt, but OpCapita beat them to the finishing line.

The banks are thought to have rolled Game's loans into Baker Acquisitions, the company created by OpCapita to front the transaction. Game collapsed owing £40m to suppliers, £20m to landlords and £10m in tax. Shareholders saw the value of their holdings reduced to zero. Last week, PwC stemmed further losses by closing 277 stores and making 2,104 staff redundant.

"This means the Game brand will not be another one of the retail names disappearing from the high street in the current difficult climate," said PwC partner and Game Group administrator Mike Jervis.

In my local area there were two GAME stores and a Gamestation store, only the one GAME store shut whilst the other shops stayed open for business, and thankfully won't be going anywhere.

Gamestop may be interested in buying 291 GAME shops

GameStop, the world's largest video games retailer, has expressed an interest in buying the Iberian operation of troubled Game Group, the Independent has learned.

News of the approach came as it emerged that another supplier was withholding products from Game.
GameStop's interest in all, or parts, of Game's 291-stores operation in Spain and Portugal is a rare piece of good news for the company. Both declined to comment.

But Game, which has 610 UK shops, still faces a battle to safeguard its future. Its shares closed at 4.6p yesterday. The supplier Capcom is refusing to ship its latest games, Street Fighter X Tekken and Asura's Wrath, scheduled for release on Friday, to Game.

This followed the technology giants Electronic Arts and Nintendo pulling products last week over concerns about its creditworthiness.
A Game spokeswoman said: "We're in talks with Capcom to resolve this temporary situation and we apologise to our customers for this disappointing news."

It put its 663-stores overseas operation up for sale by appointing advisers at Rothschild in January.

Game Group PLC own both GAME and Gamestation brand stores in the UK. Whilst this article discusses Gamestop's interest in purchasing Spanish and Portuguese GAME shops, this may also mean Gamestop could become a brand in the UK beyond its current online stores.
