Boot it into safe mode with F8 (just after the bios screen disapear, hammer F8). You should be able to fix it from there, system restore, scan for viruses, etc.
You can also boot to a minimal type of OS (ubuntu live cd, win pe) and copy the files to an external storage, as someone else said.
If you have a virus many manufacturers have boot cds which you can boot up your computer with to remove viruses.
When you choose the path to reinstall XP, you can try to reinstall a new XP over the previous one, might save you some time if that fixes it. Have worked a few times for me. Just choose new installation but pick the same installation destination as the old XP.
Just a few tips.

Setting up irc.gbatemp.net is such a waste of time, I'm not really going to join ANOTHER network for just one channel to talk in. I can't join 20 networks just because everyone wants to run their own irc server.
I really liked gbatemp.net chan on efnet, you will loose alot of users by using your own irc server. But I suppose you knew that when you set it up. While your at it, lets put all channels in one server each
Sigh.. guess I'm not the first to be annoyed by this.

Sandisk Ultra II series are great memory cards. I usually tend to want to invest in them (costs a few bucks more) but they are much faster in writing speeds (also a little faster in read), so it goes much faster when you fill up the card. Also less chance of slowdowns in games (but most memory cards run all games fine).
