You guys do know they have a FAQ page, right? It might possibly answer some of the questions that you've been asking.

The Mother Translation Group is great and Mato is doing an amazing job showing us all the process stages. They're wanting the most perfect translation patch ever made and working for it.

But “real life” is a big contender for everybody and this slows things a bit.

I don't think we will see a final patch anytime soon (hope not) but it will be great when fully released! (happy.gif)

I remember last year they were talking of a Nov07 release then they changed their minds to around now. Take a look at the blog from last year you'll see the posts.

I'm sure it is mighty difficult for them to do this. Sometimes the goal seems further than it actually was as you approach it.

I love that Mato is doing this, its kinda silly to piss and moan about how they wont release partial patches, but they are certainly going faster than Nintendo ever plans to, so until then you should be thankful that anyone is doing it at all.

The Mother 3 translation is a joke to real ROM hackers and translators.

Why haven't they released a partial translation patch like a traditional ROM translation project?

Anyone remember the original pokemon gold/silver translations? How every few days you could reload your save from the previous version, play that? Maybe I'm just too jaded.

Yes, maybe you are.

I don't know who you consider "real" ROM hackers and translators, but there's clearly been a precedence set of exactly the opposite of what you're considering traditional. Just take a look at the majority of the translations posted to http://www.romhacking.net/
Almost all of the most well known translations were NOT released until they were in a seemingly finished state. Some popular examples I can think of off the top of my head:
- Radical Dreamers
- Tales of Phantasia (Definitely the PSX translation, which has only had a single 1.0 release so far. I think DeJap didn't release a beta of their SNES translation until the actual text translation was complete.)
- Star Ocean SNES
- Der Langrisser SNES
- Most of the 60+ translations by the Aeon Genesis group.

It seems to me that a large majority of projects that receive partial releases never get finished. Just consider any of those Pokemon translations you mentioned above. I don't recall a single one actually being completed, they all got dropped months before the games were officially released in English.

In the case of the Menu & Items patch, Mato did it simply because he actually cared. He wanted a November release date, and when it couldn't be met, he gave something in return to make up for it. With regards to the actual complete text translation, a beta isn't really feasible. There isn't enough room to throw the english script into an unhacked rom, and the game is in no state to be played from start to finish without crashing or severe display anomalies on a partially hacked one. Considering that the only thing left script-wise seems to be revision, a beta probably wouldn't be worth it. I don't think 'beta' will last very long when it's finally reached.

Just my 2 cents, although I personally think some people here are being too optimistic in estimating how soon this will be done. There's definitely at least 4 more months of work for them to do.

Edit: P.S. - No hostility intended, unlike some of the other responses....

The people involved in this translation have been hacking roms since you were in diapers, and are responsible for some of the biggest translations ever. If they are a joke, what does that make you?

Posts like that are just wrong.

Please grow up sir.

They are still at the drama and cocktease stages. Enjoy the fine screenshots and item/menu patch.

What drama? Do you even know who Tomato is? Honestly.

Exactly. Look at Mega Man 6.

To date... The game has never been officially released in Europe, Australia, or any other PAL region, in any form, for any platform, ever. Just like Chrono Trigger!

Think about how lazy Capcom is if they can't bother finding space to stick a 512KB already in English entry of a major series on one of their many compilations after over 14 years.

Nintendo is better. But still flubs sometimes. Like Kirby & the Amazing Mirror had "Mr. Flosty" as a translation error. Or the original Engrish intro to Zelda 1.

You give really good examples of translations that don't involve huge blogs and hype the shit out of themselves with disproportionaly low release. However, you are right about my use of Pokemon gold/silver as a traditional ROM translations. The pokemon gold/silver translations were 100% completed before the English release of the game. Of course it was a literal translation, with stuff like nuts instead of berries. Most traditional ROM translations are just a release.

r0ni, If you have a counter point you are free to make it. I say you are wrong and as evidence I'd show the terrible low-content post you just made. I've backed up my point a lot more than you have for yours. smile.gif

INTERNETS, you above everyone should be privy to the going-ons around the INTERNETS.

Also you guys are picking apart a comment I made quite a while ago. Way to beat a dead horse, and yes I am just as guilty.

Even though I have expressed my oppinions on the project, hey! It's their project. They could replace all the characters with wangs and I would still play it when they release. I actually DO want to play Mother 3, ya know.

The blog isn't necessarily a hype machine – although it is an unintended side effect of the process. I've known Tomato, the head translator and head hacker of the project, for about eight years now. The reason he refuses to release an partial hack is so Internet ROM hacking scenester wannabes can

i mean

He's going for as close to a professional-level translation as possible, not releasing partial Pokemon Gold bullcrap patches whipped up in Hex Workshop in a 13-year-old's room while he fiddles his diddle to hentai JPGs he found by searching "cartoon girl sex" on Hotbot.
