Sega does what Nintendon't.
Then there's Sony, but let's not get into that. |

Not to mention literally every company that operates out of Japan has been getting completely screwed by the yen. I know Nintendo got some pretty harsh losses despite rather fantastic 3DS software sales (hardware sales don't help them). It's the strong yen that screw them and I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony drop out of TVs. They still have major holds in music and film so they've got their fingers in enough pies. Hopefully they have some fire sale on those budget 3D TVs, I wouldn't mind getting one. Mostly because big corporations money doesn't 100% come from sales rather from long and short term investments with excess capital. Nintendo had for a long time a bunch of money that they were just kind of sitting on and investors always complained why they didn't have better financial investments, long story short it caught up to them when the yen got strong. Anyway poeple buy sharp tvs? The only time I see them are at walmart, cheap tvs aren't going to be very profitable. |

I have a Samsung television in my bedroom and I love it.
My parents have a Sony television in the living room and it's not as good. What does strong yen mean anyway? |

I'm not surprised that Sharp is on that list for losses. Their TVs are utter crap... At the place I used to work, commercials would constantly be up to demo them, and on more than a few the Sharps would cut out on the picture. Even crappier than Westinghouse or Coby? Never thought that would be possible. Now you're making me think of another brand we had that was nothing but pure ass. We had them as a black friday special and only sold about ten. |

Maybe overwhelmed Sony lawsuits, PS3 BC compatibility removal and ranting like 13 year old boys weren't a good idea, after all. Don't forget horrible PR ethics, disrespect to customers and over estimating what the market is capable of bearing in terms of hardware and pricing with the PS3 and PS Vita. Posts merged

Sharp may not make money, but there isn't without a doubt that they are one of the strongest TV manufacturers on the market today and are constantly ahead of the game with technology.

And the difference in picture quality between the two is huge. I'd take a Samsung or a Sharp over an LG for picture quality any day. You get what you pay for with LG, but their colour contrasts such compared to the slightly more expensive competition. Edited by DSGamer64, 09 February 2012 - 03:34 AM. |

Wait, so these companies are failing because their run from one of.the few countrys that haven't taken a major hit in the economy? Well lets put it this way: Sell a TV in Japan for lets say 100 000 yen. That's around 975 €. Now the average price of that range TVs are about 500 € in an EU country. They can't sell it at 975 € since people won't buy it (well at least not the amount needed for profit). Thus they sell it for lets say 600 €. That's already 375 € less than in Japan. Dum di dum, not being hit by the recession that bad in the home economy isn't really that big a deal if exports are far too expensive for other countries. This is also the reason why the Chinese yuan (spelling?) is also quite devalued. If the real price of yuan was in place, the prices of Chinese export products would probably be around 5x more. tl;dr: Less profit for Japanese companies in countries where they export when the yen is valued high. That's pretty much everyone else. |
