Right on time comes the release of LT+ 3.0 for Lite-On 9504/0272, 0225, 0401 and 1071 all of which are firmwares seen on the DG-16D4S drive model seen only in the 360 slim. Do note there is also the Lite-On 1175 (also only seen in "slim" 360s) meaning there is only that and Hitachi 78/79 drives (as well as the as yet unhacked slim hitachi) in need for a LT+ 3.0 release- remember non 78/79 hitachi drives and samsung drives do not feature AP2.5 and so do not need this. Much like the other LT+ 3.0 releases this adds support for the "topology data" which can be used to completely bypass AP2.5 and dodge the need to reburn discs whenever microsoft updates the dashboard or more recently where it applied unique per console updates silently (the event that triggered the release of this method).

Do note since the release of original liteon and benq LT+3.0 we have also seen the release of ABGX360 1.0.6 that added nice and easy checking and support for this new data although you can still download and patch if you want.

c4evaspeaks.com - contains news on all things 360 DVD firmware related.
Jungleflasher site - one of the main 360 DVD firmware tools (version 0.1.92(304) now available to support this firmware release).

Thanks to DinohScene for the heads up.

I'm a total 360 noob, but i do have off hand knowledge of how this works, this driver/firmware for the disc drive in the 360 enables me to play backups alone? nothing else needed?

Basically yes.
You will need tools to flash it to the drive and extract the DVD Key.

But no modchip or other soldering/downgrading is needed.

In addition to what DinohScene said I will note we are strongly advised to get a burner and flash it with a custom firmware if you want to play the newest of new XGD3 games* (still works as a normal drive on top of that)- the entry level one (and frankly who cares about LabelTag or LightScribe) runs very little these days (a quick scan of Amazon says about $25) and frankly trying to mess around with laptop or drives you have had since the machine was built tends to end with a fist shaped hole in the wall (you might waste more money on lunch but everybody reacts badly to bad burns when it comes to dual layer stuff it would seem).

The "iXtreme Burner MAX" customized PC DVD burner fw allows for burning 100% of an XGD3 ISO to regular DVD+R DL discs. Preferred media for error-free burns are Verbatim MKM001 (burning at 2.4x), and Verbatim MKM003 (burning at 2.4x or 4x). Note: "A" versions have MTK chipset, but are old and untested. "Y" versions have the NEC chipset, which is not supported. All regular features of the burner function as normal, including LightScribe, LabelTag, Smart-Erase, Smart-Burn, Smart-X, and SuperAllWrite. Even with the custom iXtreme Burner MAX fw flashed to the drive, it is still fully functional as a regular burner, not only for XGD3, but also XGD2, and all other ISOs and data, up to 8.7GB worth.

*pretty much all of them are whether they need it or not and especially for the "big" games.

Granted it is not as nice as it was two years ago but
Dump DVD firmware key using nice GUI tool- save DVD key in many places
Use key to build new DVD firmware using nice GUI tool
Flash new DVD firmware using nice GUI tool
Check game is good/up to spec using nice GUI sporting tool
If old style game burn using good iso burner like imgburn
-if it is new style game burn with readily available and cheap DVD drive using a simple program-
Insert and play

Upkeep amounts to checking in with news sites when a dashboard update is released if you are using xbox live (if you are offline you have a month or two before it becomes an issue if playing new games and never if playing ones you already have) to see if you have to do anything (in the last year or so this might mean build a new firmware and flash it before updating) and keeping an eye on a news site to see if anything odd has happened. The NFO/dirname of releases should hold any necessary extras and if not by the time you have the release any info should be there. Were it not for the fact you have to hold a screwdriver (a torx one no less) during this I would probably call it easier than the wii.
The only real difficulties come when people try to delay responding to changes to avoid having to reburn games or people are waiting for hacked firmwares to respond to updates (usually quick for the back up and running release for existing games and not much longer to able to negate any new issues).

By this do you mean buy a dvd burner? or would a regular one work?

Yes.

A Liteon iHAS drive.
It burns the complete 8.13 GB of a XGD3 ISO to a regular DL DVD.
It's advice to burn all XGD3 games with that burner because of future CIV checks (like the ones Forza implemented)
CIV checks will check the 1st 1% and the last 100% of the disc.

Plus it gives you a reason to buy a quality burner to burn 360 games with.
