An interesting bit of news hit yesterday. Square Enix filed a trademark for the name "The World Ends With You" in Japan a couple of months ago. This is of course the English name for the hit DS action RPG Square released several years back. It's widely regarded by many to be ones of the best DS games ever made, garnering critical acclaim and high scores almost universally from both mainstream gaming journalists as well as regular gamers. A sequel has been heavily requested since then. An interesting thing to note about this trademark is that in Japan, the game was originally titled "It's a Wonderful World". But when the game was localized for other regions, it was renamed The World Ends With You. However, the trademark filed by Japan today was for its English localized title instead. An interesting little tidbit. It could be that the creators felt the English name was more fitting for the plot.

This could mean any number of things. Perhaps a sequel, or an updated rerelease, or any other sort of thing. But this does seem to indicate there's something planned for it in the near future. This trademark also comes only a few months after it was revealed that characters from The World Ends With You would be appearing as cameos in the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. In that game, the protagonists Neku, Shiki, Joshua, Beat, and Rhyme all appear in one of the worlds as alternate reality versions of their selves from The World Ends With You. Tetsuya Nomura, The creator of both Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends With You, also teased in an interview from September that the characters' appearing in KH3D may signify something happening in the future, saying "something" is being worked on.

So keep your eyes peeled. This could definitely indicate some sort of revival of The World Ends With You in the future. Maybe even soon to be announced. Very exciting tease for fans of the original!

Oh of course, we all know trademarks can mean nothing. Though the timing is more interesting than anything. Not only did the creator tease just months ago that something related to it was being worked on, but characters from TWEWY are appearing now in the latest Kingdom Hearts game (multiple characters, not just one). Seems like a lot of information lately all together. Kind of odd and a little suspicious.

This could just as easily not be a sequel too. Could be some sort of upgraded version of the original or whatnot. Maybe even an anime or something non-gaming related. Though i'm inclined to think this will be some sort of sequel.

I'm kind of interested in how they decided to opt for the English localized name for the trademark. I have to say, after playing the game, The World Ends With You makes much more sense as a title.

I always felt that "The World Ends With You" worked a lot better for the plot than "It's A Wonderful World," sorta makes it sound less serious than it was

Hum... This is def a game I really loved... I'm still trying to get another copy after mine was stolen together with one of my DS's a couple years ago. ='(
If they released a sequel/remake or whatever for the 3DS, I'd cry manly tears of joy. =3

you have a point, but to me, when I hear sth like "its a wonderful world" and then see what this game is, it gives me a different view, as though the title is being sarcastic. and that to me would give me a kinda different view of the game, maybe not a better or worse view, but one that shows just how twisted that game was.

The pain of a missing DS... especially with the BEST DS game in existence..... I feel your pain, :C

./on topic.
Sequel for the TWEWY? Yes please! <3
Be it any platform, it's a "must buy" for me. :3
Although, I can't help to feel that this might mean nothing about a prequel/sequel or anything similar.... :c

It was fun, dammit. But so. Bloody. Difficult.
I was spooning my eyes out with a fork whilst playing towards the end of this game

I'd still buy it.
Like 10 times.
It's been long enough that I don't remember the game super clearly, so I really wouldn't mind a remake at this point.
But I can't say I wouldn't wet myself in anticipation if they announced a sequel.

It wasn't that difficult once you got the hang of ONLY controlling either character when needed. If you focus on Neku, your partner does a pretty great job of avoiding damage. You only really need to control them during boss battles and specific enemy fights. The only thing that sucked is that you need to basically grab Neku and run him around the stage blindly while you control your partner. But, it works.

and now, i'm going to go find TWEWY and restart it completely. For great justice.

Lol, I actually tried multitasking and controlling both the top and bottom screen at once. Last "battle", and my DS's touchscreen was scratched up pur-itty badly.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
Bearing that in mind, can I kill you with a blunt knife now?
