I was thinking about getting a PSP from gamestop for $99 because they're on sale, it would a brand new 3000 one. I don't know what firmware it would start on(guessing the newest since its a new PSP >.<). I was also gonna get the 16GB memory stick so I can mod it for free games. Was wondering if I could get someone else's opinion here so I know if im doing the right thing or not. All opinions welcome

Well if you're going to pirate then the better choice would be PSP Go.

It would be cheaper than getting a 3000 + 16GB

Well, just like you , I waited until the very end to get a PSP...
I got mine about 6 months ago, and I don't regret it one bit.
Up until this point, my main handled gaming system was a DSiXL, so for me getting a PSP was like jumping to the next generation or something LOL...
Why get it now and not years ago, when it was hot ?
The reason is simple: It's so easy to hack these days ( you just put connect it to the PC and transfer over a couple of files and then you can instal a permanent or non permanent custom firmware ) .
Also being the PSP at the end of it's life-cycle, it means that you can find a huge back catalog of games waiting to be played.
In fact, the PSP library might be not quite as diverse as the DS one, but it's fairly decent in it's own rights.
Lot's of retro stuff that I'm loving too ( Castlevania Dracula X remake, Ghost and Ghoblins, Taito legends, Capcom Classics rearmed and so on ) and don't forget, since you are planning on modding it, there are lots of brilliant emulators out there, some better then on DS, for the higher res screen and more processing power.
I also got a 16GB pro duo, and really, the amount on content you can put on it is huge.
So I would definitely recommend to get one, since anyway you are planning on modding it. And at price point that you found it, it's really an attractive option for an handled system.

Just to comment on other replys while I was typing this, I was never too fond of the PSP GO.
Surely you got the advantage of the internal storage, effectively cutting down a considerable expense of 16GB mem stick, but in the end I'm super happy with the 3000 slightly larger screen, d-pad and buttons build and placement, and battery life.

Before buying a 3000 hunt around other stores, i know a grocery chain here in Canada that is blowing out 2000s for $89.

Whichever one you get, they are lots of fun.

See now thats what I was thinking, because now theres sooooo many games I wanna play(Personas, Warhammer, Rainbow Six, etc.). I also liked the fact that there was a more high res screen, but the only place I know that sells them besides online is gamestop, and I was also wondering if I get 3000 with newest firmware, would I have to buy a bunch more stuff to mod the thing? I don't wanna walk into gamestop and blow $160 on something that can't be(looked through the PSP hacking/modding F.A.Q. but couldn't tell).

Well take it easy, following this excellent guide by Rydian, it's clear that you can mod ANY PSP these days, the worst it can happen is that you won't be able to install a permanent CFW on it but only a temporary one ( which is almost the same anyway ), and certainly you won't need any extra hardware, trust me.
I modded 3 PSP in the past few months, even one that had one of the latest firmwares and I didn't have any trouble at all.
Just follow the stickys and you'll be fine.

Like the above poster said, just follow the guides and you'll be fine. Last I checked, every official firmware can be hacked, or even downgraded (depends on the PSP). I got a PSP Go with 6.60 and I was able to downgrade it to 6.20 and modded it with 6.20 PRO with a permanent patch. Just do a little bit of reading and you'll benefit yourself in the end.

Just to add to the general consensus, I give a yes to buying a PSP. I also got it when it was nearly last-gen, and if you really want to play a lot of the games, it should be a no-brainer since it's really very cheap now, as well as easy to mod (no extra hardware, as said.)

I bought a Go and haven't regretted anything, even if people have trouble with the form-factor and the battery life. It lasts as long as a handheld should be used in everyday situations (school breaks, commutes, random waits) and I just charge it every night. Screen's crisp since it's smaller but has the same resolution as a 3000. In my case, a Go was the same price as a 3000 without a memory card, and being strapped for cash, I just went with the Go. All depends on your preference along with the price tag, if you're concerned with that.

i just bought a psp 3000 for 99$ new. Came with 6.39 firmware and i upgraded to 6.60 then installed the pro 6.60 b10 firmware. Works great. I bought a 32 gig pro duo mem stick from ebay for 50$ and filled the thing up with emulators and roms and tons of iso's. Its nice to have as much ram as possible with the psp as most games are HUGE.

I have a PSP Go and my brother has a PSP 3004. Both are good but PSP Go is more crisp and clear, also the colours look more vibrant on it. I am not a very technical person but with my observation as a gamer, I find PSP Go better. I have small hands and fingers so it's quite good in my hands.

I don't know, I really like the feel of the PSP 3000 d-pad, it might as well be the best d-pad out of them all for me ( xbox360, DS family, Wii CC PRO,other PSPs ) and just as good as the sixaxis one IMO.

Agreed. It does have one of the best D-pads on handhelds. My only beef with PSP 3004 is its scanlines issue. I don't know but the screen is not as good as the one on Go. It's not really noticeable while playing games though.

i really prefer the PSPgo because it has very clicky buttons(works much better for music games) and several extra features.
best of all is the ability to pair a PS3 controller which gives you the original controls for emulated PS1 games, and better grip and analog controls for PSP games.
it also has 16GB built-in, and up to 16(maybe even 32 now)GB of removable storage so you can keep a backup of your saves, and you can use it to sort games.
the screen is slightly smaller, but because of that also a bit sharper.
and it supports suspending a game so you can use other features(similar to, though slower than what the 3DS does)

as far as CFW: i recommend LME 6.60
it runs on the latest OFW, and although it's not really permanent it can be installed to flash alongside OFW with a launcher built into OFW.
this means under extra(or music) on OFW in place of the comics app(or sensme) you get an option to switch to CFW.
this is safer against bricks, allows you to bypass some unconventional anti-piracy checks(some PS3-psp connectivity stuff can detect CFW, so it's useful if you can easily switch to OFW), and if you use standby instead of shutdown it costs you no boot time.
and the psp has incredible standby times.
it's power drain in standby is almost as little as the amount a rechargeable battery loses from not using it, it can last for months on standby.

The PSP is a brilliant device, the libary isn't as plentiful as the DS but it really does have fantastic games which you can't get on the DS. VCII, MGS:PW, Ys and GoW are excellent. That and the fact it's a bloody good emulation device.
