Would have been if they had made the top screen a real 800x240 screen in 2D mode. Having seen the way it is used in retroarch emulators with the N3DS, it's so much sharper than 400x240

There is, because it would be higher resolution, and the games already run in that resolution in 3d mode, they could run in 800x240 in 2D mode.

If you switch the depth slider on lowest setting on a N3DS, the 3D effect isn't really all that noticable, but the higher resolution is.

Not quite. On a 3DS, 3D mode is actually displaying two 400 x 240 images stitched together, which is not the same as displaying one single 800 x 240 image. The game itself is still being rendered in 400 x 240. The reason why some 3DS games look sharper in 3D mode is because it disables anti-aliasing so edges look clearer.

It seems RetroArch is using a similar filter effect in the highres mode, and not actually rendering one continuous 800x240 image.
