You could use a PC for spotify unless you want to go on the go at which a point a phone is your only option.
As for whatsapp, you could use messnger on facebook or, dare I say it, discord for closer friends.

Quick question why do you consider it a distraction from society?

I'd grab something that can use microSD cards for an easy/cheap storage solution.

Yeah, looking at a FiiO x1ii, a 256gb sd card
I just find that anytime I have a inkling a free time I either go into my phone or into my ps4, obviously because I'm out more than I'm not I want to remove one of those distractions, I want to learn a language, I want to learn photography, I want to discover new hobbies and interests and due to a medical condition I lacked the opportunity to develop these when I was younger.by removing my phone I hope that I'll fulfil my empty time with these interests instead of so easily turning back to my phone

I'm quite a social recluse due to this and I feel as if the phone itself is too easy an escape and to good an excuse not to follow through on these aspirations

You can just use the browser for WhatsApp and take an MP3 Player with you.

I dont think I could live without a phone really. I use it everyday for music, work, and talking to people. Yes it may be a distraction but you just have to learn to hold back on the use 24/7.
I was driving yesterday and this lady infront of me was just drifting into the left lane and pretty close to the edge of the road way too much for me to feel comfortable to even think of passing her! So I just honked my horn until she started to pay attention. Upon driving past them she was looking down at her phone more than looking at the road... Her whole family was...

Dont be those people. Be smart :D

Im just saying though, just learn to control the use of it. When I was younger, I would sneak my phone out in class just to text or play games. I did the same thing when I first started working (I know, bad me).
Its not easy to limit yourself, but If you feel you are using it way too much don't just chuck it.... Use it in moderation.

I see. Then removing your phone from your life might be the best course of action.

Smartphones are evil devices in a way, but you still require one if you want to use Whatsapp.
AFAIK, you can't use it from a browser without an active phone, as the browser version actually communicates with your phone, not with Whatsapp servers. Remove or turn off the phone, and the browser version of Whatsapp stops working.

Of course you could emulate android and install whatsapp on a PC, but that might be overkill.

Disagree. I didn't get a smartphone until a few years back. I still hardly ever use any of its smart features and could easily give it up without missing a beat.

Just purchase the cheapest Alcatel android phone. Its got almost no power, and can hardly do anything besides basic things. Perhaps even a different brand, Alcatel is not your only option. Research the least powerful phone

+1 to the don't need a phone thing.

My last phone I had for more than a week... befell an accident at the first available opportunity some ten years ago.

If you need whatsapp and you mainly only need it because the people you want to talk to only use that in this abortion of an IM market (I honestly thought there was a chance for an open market the other year... how wrong I was) and you reckon a PC will do then do it to it.

Spotify is an odd one for me. I have set it up for people, mainly restaurants, but honestly can not fathom the appeal. If I need to discover some new music youtube playlists and related videos do well for that.

My only real problem with no phone is a lack of a camera as my main one is a bit bulky for everyday, fortunately I just brought my old compact camera back to life.
