I just saw this in usenet :

F-Zero.SNES-VC.NTSC.Wii-iND.rar

the nfo reads :

Code:
ND presents,

F-Zero.SNES-VC.NTSC.Wii-iND

Size : 3 487 808 octets
Support : SD Card / Wii
Protection : Nothing

Needed:
Â- Nintendo Wii
Â- SD Memory Card
Â- Saved Channel *Included*

Instructions : Access your SD card and place the file named 'private'
onto the drive. Take the card out of your system and
place it in the Wii. Navigate to your Wii memory management settings
and find the section that is labeled 'Channels'. You will find two tabs
inside, one for your Wii and the other for the SD card. Select the SD
tab and you will find the saved channel present. Copy it to your Wii
and you will be done.

If you enjoy it, purchase it yourself. Wii did!

anyone can confirm this is not fake ?

This works with the Wii 1.0. i.e. if you have given your Wii internet, it has gotten the update to fix this. Just like the Shop channel exploit that has been fixed by patches.

I really have no doubts that its the real thing, but its unusable as it is.

Each ROM is encrypted in some manner and linked to your Wii, they are still trying to figure out how exactly. But actually ripping it is terribly easy since all you have to do is download and transfer to your SD card. The Wii itself says you can put games on your SD card if you run out of space on the built-in Wii memory (or avoid running out of it). It might have been possible with earlier firmwares, but its been patched.

I'm suppoing that each VC game actually contains 3 things :

-The game in ROM format.
-An encryption to lock it to your Wii. Possibly checking for a matching MAC address, friend code or something hidden/secret on your Wii.
-A 'pure' emulator with simple controller remapping functions, that translates your gamecube/VC remote controls to whatever the game needs it to be.

When the encryption is cracked, they will most probably find ways to get games on other Wiis, and probably even replace the ROM completly by another game that isn't normally on the VC by some simple hacking.

Probably not that simplistic.. even the DS uses RSA signing/encryption after all...
The Wii are probably shipped with a unique public/private key pair, when you download a vc your wii sends its public key to the servers at nintendo and the vc is encrypted using it. That way only a wii with your private key can decrypt it and run it... all this is probably made even more complex by all the keys being signed/encrypted by a nintendo master key (CA/cert style) to stop people messing with their unit's keys, and hex editing the vcs to change the roms.

People seem to be under-thinking how software is protected ... heck arcade machines from the 80's/90's had encrypted processors, suicide devices,.. everyone is just going to have to wait, some 14 kid with a copy of visual basic isn't going to break the wii.
