I'm sorry if someone has already thought of this idea.

What I'm thinking of is a program that can use the DS system as a controller. The reason I think it's possible is because the DS can hook up to the Wii and there has been a way to hook up a wiimote to a PC. Can anyone find out if this is?

There are ways to do it via a Wifi connection. Win2DS comes to mind, although I believe there are a couple other programs that do the same thing whose names I'm forgetting at the moment.

i havent tried it myself, but there is the PadSend app that allows you to use a DS as a gamepad.
theres also win2ds and ds2win that allow you to view and control your PC desktop from yer DS.

I've been interested in this too, but I'm stuck with the wrong type of wi-fi. (It needs WPA and I have WEP, or vice-versa) DS2Key doesn't work for me because of this. I'm wanting to use it for a laptop with a built in wireless receiver, so is there anything I can do?

You'll need to change your wireless to WEP, or buy one of those USB things you stick in your PC that will share the connection to just your DS.
