Tetris the movie will be part of a sci-fi trilogy

Just when you thought it might not come to be a real thing, we're given the news that Tetris the movie will actually be part of a sci-fi trilogy.

In an interview with Empire, Larry Kasanoff, the man behind the fall of Tetris falling tetrominoes in a live-action movie, confirmed rumors about the movie being a trilogy "purely because the story we conceived is so big". Emphasising on the latter by further adding that "it’s just a big story".

"We’re not going to have blocks with feet running around the movie,” he tells Empire, "but it’s great that people think so. It sets the bar rather low!”

How low? Well that remains to be seen as Kasanoff says "I guarantee you it’s not what you think. No-one has come remotely close to figuring out what we’re doing".

Based on how bad Pixels was, this is going to be worse.
I totally disagree with this statement..

The way they combined classic games into the movie (on a side note - LOVED the way how Tetris Destroyed buildings - is THIS movie gonna have that happening ??).
I also loved watching it to try & figure out which characters came from which video games...which of those games I played in my misspent youth

Ah the nostalgia !!!

If you want a bad movie based on computer games - try this one

Yeah, JUST the nostalgia. That's what they were banking on when they made the movie. The movie's writing is shit. The only thing it had going for it was nostalgia, and even that didn't save it.

The movie wasnt bad at all and it had great humor, it depends on what people think is funny. Andy Samberg, that guy is not funny at all and Popstar was boring. A lot of people didnt like galaxy quest and a lot did...

So we're somehow getting a Tetris movie before Zelda.
Good going, humanity.

How'd they get a trilogy-sized plot out of a game that can be fully explained in a single sentence?

Oh yeah, they think it's going to make money.

One could hope, but the guy "guarantees it's not what we think" so I doubt they will copy a recent movie, especially one with actual Tetris in it.

I imagined the Tetris pieces as blocks that would fall and fill out the spaces between buildings, and then sprouting tentacles that burrow into the buildings and anchor the blocks in place, until the whole city and then the whole planet is a flat featureless grey expanse.

Speaking of movies based on games, anyone here see Battleship? I liked how they found a way of including the grid from the game into the plot, but they could have left that bit out entirely and the movie would be pretty much the same. Other than that the movie had nothing to do with the board game at all, and there was no point in buying the rights and marketing it as "based on Battleship the board game".

The problem with movies based on such simple games, is that if you make them too literal, they will just be silly, and if you tweak the game mechanics to make them seem plausible and not ridiculous in the "real" world, the movie has nothing to do with the game any more and the title and game connections are there only to be tied in with a popular product (and to annoy people).
