No it isn't. Here's how it came along:

Sega (Saturn 3D / Dreamcast) > Nintendo (GameCube, Wii U) > Microsoft (Original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One).

I'm just grateful that they're both using the controller layout that Sega once used because it's far better than the layout of DualShock controllers.

It is my personal choice, I prefer the DualShock/SNES-style controllers with the d-pad above the stick. :P
tbh I would love a Classic Controller Pro U right now.

The D-PAD above the stick should've been already left in the past because what games use nowadays are the analogue sticks, not the D-PADs.

Sure the D-PADs still get used for fighting games, side-scrollers and such but the majority of other games rely on the left analogue stick only.

However, placing the left stick near the right stick gives you a better control in the camera(Or in other games, rolling or other stuff) and you can quickly push the d-pad above it too.
