Homebrew Strange black screen during MK blue shell anim

So far this has only happened in a few games.

In Mario Kart Wii, during the blue shell lightning animation, the screen goes entirely black for ~3 seconds. I've tried both CFG loader and Wiiflow, trying different USB disk, game versions, settings (NTSC/PAL, country fix, video patch, etc. to no avail).

In The House of the Dead: OverKill, during slash animation when hit.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Think I've solved this one at long last! I was using these metallic Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 USB drives (16GB & 64GB) for my Wii games, and an SD card for GC games. When I run Mario Kart Wii from the SD Card (Samsung EVO 32GB MicroSDHC) there is no black screen during the lightning animation.
