SE7EN for Moonshell 2: A developer's story

    (If you don't know what SE7EN is, it is a skin for Moonshell 2)

    A little development story for all of you. You can grab a copy of the latest RELEASE in my sig.

    SE7EN started out as a project in early 2009. You see, I was a freak for the "aero" interface. I wanted it everywhere. I wanted it on my PC, DS, Phone, etc. However, all the AK2 Vista skins were ugly and underdeveloped. Also, there were barely any aero Moonshell 2 skins at the time. So I said to myself "Screw those guys, why not make your own?"

    I worked on SE7EN mostly in the video player. It was mostly copied off of Windows Media Player 11. I used the default skin as a base, and after fiddling around with it for a while, I managed to get a nice looking video player.

    I then told myself "What's with the |>| buttons? They're really dark! And plus, the stop button looks like crap!"

    So I shined up the left and right buttons, and added a new stop button.

    Not bad, eh?

    Anyway, I was pretty satisfied by then. I was like "hey, it's WMP11 on my DS!" But then I thought about it for a while, and said "hey, this looks a lot like the default skin but simply recolored". The skin was just as blocky and boring as the default one.

    So then I looked at Windows Media Player again and I noticed the "shine" that the player had. I threw it on, and tada, it looks great!

    I thought it looked great now, but then I noticed that the colors clashed a lot. The scrollbar, or whatever you call it, simply didn't match the shiny part. It just looked bad.

    So I moved the colors around some more and got this.

    Anyway, it looked better, but I thought "hey, it doesn't really fit". So I got creative and did some cool stuff.

    I move the "scrollbar" down underneath the time to make it closer to the rest of the body. Then, I filled in the top with the classic WMP11 top-bar.

    Wow looks pretty good except the Volume bar and the Random button. The Volume text is getting in the way and the Random button's font doesn't match.

    The volume button actually looks great on the DS, it just looks weird on the computer.

    The random button... ... ... *runs off to fix*

    Nice job but I don't really like WMP title on the bottom window, it looks out of place.

    Looks really nice, just rename Windows Media Player to Moonshell Media Player and it'll be ace. [​IMG]

    Actually, I'll work more on making the player look more seven-ish when seven is released. I don't have the resources to make it a complete clone of seven.

    Either way, it's still awesome. And I actually prefer WMP 11's look to 7's media player. ^^;

    haha this is a nice change from the regular posts, it is not often we get to see the developers thoughts on there work, its just drag n drop forum posts that get dry on a daily basis. I enjoyed your story and encourage other developers to follow in your steps. [​IMG]

    By now, most resources in Windows 7 have been finalised. The RTM (final) branch already opened.

    Don't count on that happening easily.

    I just downloaded a HUGE icon pack from windows 7.

    So I think i'll be making 2 versions: SE7EN WMP11, and SE7EN WMP12.

    nice skin now we just need a port/version for SAKURA [​IMG] and it would be even better lol!
