What happened to that anyway? I have not yet laid my hands on a DSiXL, 3DS, etc.

    Is it even still there?

Not sure about the DSi, but the 3DS doesn't have pictochat. Also it was never the bomb here. I managed to accidentally pictochat with a stranger exactly once.

I don't think it was ever the bomb.

I never remembered it being remotely popular among any DS owners I knew, myself included.

Huh, okay. I remember back when my siblings, cousins, and I first received our own NDS's, we would bring them to family dinners at restaurants or boring, stationary events and join a Pictochat chat room to send each other random messages to pass the time.

Maybe only we found it fun.

If it had online features, it would be the bomb.
But ahh, it was fun giving my ds to my sister taking turns sending messages and handing it back when I was small c:

Me and my wife had some fun with it, exchanging naughty messages.... lol but now with the 3DS I expect some 3D pictures will probably replace that.....

And no that wasn't my 3DS sold at the GameStop! lol

Pictochat would be good if it worked in the background even when you play games, or if it worked like mail account and people could send messages even when your console is turned off.
The way it is, when you want to chat, you first need to contact someone and say that you want to talk. But if you have to contact him in some other way... then why use pictochat since you've already contacted him? It's useless.

doesnt the 3ds have that other message thing going on now?
you can still draw and make pictures and pass them to people that are so close you might as well just talk to them :3
but at least its a funny way to share pictures sometimes

also, pictochat did have a few fans. people actually did art on that thing. some even made little animations and comics and posted those online. it was funny and things drawn on the ds always looked a little better than they should have looked too.
obviously though, in the west, those things were unneeded. people with consoles often dont live near one another. its a whole other thing in japan, where you'd have all 4 chatrooms filled if you checked at a trainstation or during a break in some schools
