Wow $450? That's pretty good. I built a new one just a week ago.

M2N32-SLI Deluxe - 1 Firewire, 6 USB, HD sound
550W Silent Power Supply
XFX 8600 GTS 256MB DDR2(3?) (One more video card slot left)
Dual 2 GB RAM (4 GB in total with 2 more slots left)
LG DVD writer (HD DVD reader)
320 GB Hard drive

Sorry if my terms aren't correct, I'm not that good with computers. It was my first time building one.

Mine costs $900. Its pretty good for $900.

Shame. Why'd you get a crappy 8600GTS and not an 8800GT?

does this vid card look nice?

hehe $450... I had to shovel out $4,000 for mine back in 2005. It still stands up to today's machines

If I had to spend $450 on my machine, I'd get 1 component

Wow! You got pwned by the computer salesman!

LOL!

If I were to build another computer, I'd build with silence in mind. Since I don't play many games, I'd probably go for the best nVidia card I could get that has only passive cooling. At the moment I have a GS 6800 with the fan speed reduced quite a bit (it speeds back up as needed). But a silent computer-- yes!

Well, if it can handle today's games, it can handle everything else.

That said, newegg.com is popular. If you're in Canada, NCIX.com is good.

AMD vs. Intel sort of doesn't matter like it used to. It used to be obvious that bang for buck = AMD, but since the Conroe came out and then AMD dropped prices like mad, bang for buck has evened out a lot. That said I'd probably go with intel at this point.

Are you planning on getting two video cards and running SLI? I haven't read too many reviews of that lately-- have game designers finally started optimizing for it? A year ago you were better off buying a single video card that costs more instead of two that were not quite as good.

Do you have a monitor or will you need to buy one? If so, what are you thinking? Would you be happy with a 19" LCD?

Don't cheap out on the case. If you get a crappy one, your gaming experience can be marred by loud fan noise and the like.

And Vista isn't there yet when it comes to games, so I'd actually recommend sticking with XP at this point.
