The PlayStation Vita isn't the only system that has scene news today, as a user named qwertyoruiop has done something huge with the PlayStation 4. On official firmware 4.06 he managed to get Kernel access through an exploit. Established PS4 hacker "Cturt" also tweeted out the following:

The web exploit is claimed to work on 4.xx firmwares, a huge advance compared to the previous exploited firmware, 1.76. There is no guarantee of a CFW or backup loader at this point in time, but it is still a huge breakthrough in the PS4 homebrew scene.

No, PSProxy only works with the firmware below the latest one, so right now it only works on 4.50 since 4.55 was just released minutes ago.

However, without a userland exploit (the browser exploit on 4.0X) it's basically useless.
Then again, 4.0X is completely hacked, both user and kernel but is being kept private.
4.50 was hacked on kernel level but not user level, also privately.

I'd refrain from updating if you really want homebrew/backup loading.
CTurt (the one who made the DLclose exploit on 1.76) has updated to 4.06 himself so you bet there's legitimacy behind it.

what is userland exactly ? and kernel access.. these 2 need to have been hacked before you get it to be able to use homebrew and stuff ?

Basically, Userland gives us access to some of the PS4's resources and Kernel gives us all the resources.
Without kernel access, no backup loading can exist.

That's pretty much the simplest way to put it ;p

I'm mostly interested in Movian or Kodi or whatever mediaplayer they can come up with.
Last 2 years I've been using me PS3 pretty much solely for Movian.

I doubt it'll be released anytime soon tho, the hacks that is.
But it would be sweet since 1.76 PS4's are extremely hard to come by.

You could periodically check qwerty's twitter and r/ps4homebrew for any updates on the PS4 scene.
As well as wololo.

i love movian , it reads so many codecs thingies, reminds me of classic media player on pc.
but sadly it struggled on my ps3 at times, like telling me the CPU of my ps3 cannot keep playing the video and then it would stop the video (it actually works, like plays every video , but the ps3 struggles continuing the video).

and since the ps4 is way more powerful, i'd assume movian on ps4 will play the videos smoothly without any hiccups.

h.265 codecs and the new 10bit HVEC etc can't really be played on the PS3's Cell CPU.
Probably cause the hardware is to old and weak (could also be the limited memory pool)
What you could do is download films in h.264 and non HVEC rips, I usually go for ~1 GB per hour (1080p)
