At the end of the day? You sound entitled.

An "open letter" on a forum that next to none of them visit, let alone have accounts does nothing. Not to mention what they choose to do is entirely up to them. You wasted time. Congrats.

Fully agree my man, the game has undoubtedly changed as have the players. Personally piracy doesn't appeal at all to me as games are cheap enough to buy considering what you get and it actually makes you think about your investments instead of just running around collecting ISOs. My interest lies more on the homebrew side of things and how the legions of intrepid devs apply their intellect to the creation of different uses for this super powerful hardware and that is the the main crux of my perspective.

Getting an exploit out their anonymously is very easy so I see that as a false barrier but the antics we see on social media prove that this never was the intention and its this attitude I rail against when I mentioned that a private exploit should be just so in all senses of the word and not a tool used to tease/SOON the masses into following/liking which is lame.

Sad thing about all of this is, as I've mentioned, all that will come from the PS4 "scene" will be a method to pirate games and a shoddy port of Retroarch toward the ends of its lifecycle and that is a darn shame.

Didn't I reply to you or one of your kinsfolk earlier with this quote?

I don't do social media, if you feel like being productive then raise their attention and send them a link to this message. If not feel free to continue contributing with your excellent output.

It's because modern consoles offer nothing special when compared to a personal computer.

Because pc is now cheap compared to the 2000's and you can pirate/emulate on it without waiting years for a jailbreak,it pretty much defeats the point of console hacks. While it does unlock the full pontential of a console you wait years on unfullfilled promises just to do things you can already do on a pc.

Both of these are exceedingly valid points considering that PS4/Xbone are just PCs in a new frock but I suppose its the "look its doing something it wasn't supposed to do, woohoo!" aspect that appeals as well as having a multitude of systems on one system. That and when you throw in my dislike of Windows means that its not really an option I've considered before even though I have recently been looking into some HTPCs for just such usage.

Part of it just modding for moddings sake really - old habits die hard.

In some ways I agree with you, however in other ways the open letter does come across as sounding quite entitled.

I do agree I think the homebrew scene for consoles peaked with the original Xbox, however tech wise that was a different world to what we live in today.
At the time PC's we're very expensive, a lot of people we're only just getting computers. If you had multiple in your house you'd be doing pretty well for yourself, even broadband was a luxury in the early 2000's.

An Xbox which although was quite expensive (in my opinion been a teenager in School back then) was a lot more affordable than a computer. It could easily connect to TV's and HDTV's and was networkable, so the potential to do things we take for granted today when hacked was massive.

Keep in mind back then for a DVD player that would play Divx and Xvid you would be paying £500+, yet you could hack an Xbox Classic which was significantly cheaper and do so much more with it.

With that in mind their was a lot more interest in hacking it and security was not that great back then.

These days you can get a £30 Raspberry Pi which can do most things people want from a hacked games console, people are walking about with phones which are now more powerful than the last generation of consoles are and are capable of emulating the Wii and GameCube.

I personally do love the homebrew scene on consoles and messing about with my stuff making it do more than intended, sadly it's just not that beneficial these days.

The PS4 does have pretty good ports of Linux where its processing power can be used, e.g. video encoding. Heck i've even run Dolphin and Steam on my PS4. Fail0verflow have contributed a lot to the PS4 kernel / driver wise. All that really needs to be done in improved GPU / Audio drivers.

I do get the feeling the vast majority just want piracy and cheating though, which is why i think if people want to willy wave on social media then let them. They don't owe anyone a thing and likely know it will be mainly used for piracy. For them the challenge is breaking a secure system, if you can do that then fair play you earn bragging rights as it takes a lot of talent to do that.

I would like to see a PS4 Homebrew scene, if it happens i don't think it will be anything like consoles from previous generations though.

I'm gonna have to agree with the cheaters and pirates concept of 1 reason why they sit on them. PS3 days... Lets just say that I wasn't too kind online as a child. Cheating and pirating is the main reason these days why people want jailbreaks. It was then as well.... Its sad to see exploits die out so fast, but nothing that we can do. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Sadly, Ive seen many great devs get pushed away by the toxic environment that comes with these types of communities :/

I'd say the Wii and 3DS scenes have "delivered on all counts" and they were both after the OG Xbox scene.

Such a great reply filled with valid points. In many way this thread is the equivalent of this:

Haha I remember that Simpsons Episode, very fitting response.

I do see where you are coming from though, we can still dream as i'd love to be proved wrong looking back at this thread in a few years.

The old times were good times :D

Darn tooting. I've been doing this since the days of BBSs so that pic isn't too far off a portrait :rofl2: but part of my mind just boggles at the way "scenes" unfold these days as highlighted throughout the thread as it just wasn't that way back in my day ;) Now if you'll excuse me I've got to tie an onion to my belt (it was the style you see?).

I only read the first couple paragraphs of the op.. tldr

But from what I've read, I agree. I think most members of the scene today are either attention wanting kids that don't really have anything, or actually hackers that want control or to push their moral "authority".

The scene itself is to blame for this transformation though. All the gitty kids that want everything for nothing will jump on any rumor of a hack and inflate it beyond reasoning.

Back in my day (can't believe I just said that) any announcement of a hack or piece of homebrew without at least a beta release was met with hostility. Most members had no patience for fakes, stipulations, or showing off.

We had a phrase for anything that closely seemed like the previously mentioned. A phrase ive come to miss and think we desperately need in the first response to each of these announcements.

    "Fake and gay"

How does that explain rogero, deank, rebug, habib and the countless others who either directly facilitated piracy or made it easier. Geohot only got busted because of the exact social media dick waving the OP mentioned.
