Nintendo Switch Sells 10 Million Worldwide
Nintendo’s Video Game System Passes Major Milestone in Just Nine Months

Despite launching in March, a month not usually reserved for home console launches, and with the busy holiday shopping season still in full swing, the Nintendo Switch system has already sold 10 million units to consumers around the world, according to Nintendo’s internal sales figures.

Full PR:
Nintendo Switch is a home console that can be played on a TV, and also taken instantly on the go – it lets people play their favorite games anytime, anywhere and with anyone. And since every Nintendo Switch system comes bundled with two Joy-Con controllers, players can easily share the fun of compatible multiplayer games with friends and family right out of the box.

The robust and diverse library on Nintendo Switch features two of the most acclaimed video games of all time in Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. At The Game Awards last week in Los Angeles, Super Mario Odyssey won the award for Best Family Game. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was honored with the awards for Game of the Year, Best Action/Adventure Game and Best Game Direction.

Nintendo Switch is also home to fun multiplayer games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 and ARMS that can be played online or with friends and family in the same room, as well as an ever-growing list of great third-party games like Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, FIFA 18, Rocket League, L.A. Noire, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Golf Story and Stardew Valley, Nintendo Switch is truly for any player.

“As you can see in people’s living rooms, on a plane or riding the subway, fans all over the world can enjoy playing Nintendo Switch wherever they go,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “The response from fans has been great, and we’re doing our very best to satisfy demand during the holiday shopping season.”

After a record-breaking 2017, Nintendo Switch will continue its momentum in 2018. The system will see the launch of Nintendo-published games like Kirby Star Allies, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 and a new game in the beloved Yoshi franchise, in addition to big third-party games like Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus from Bethesda, Mega Man 11 from Capcom, PROJECT OCTOPATH TRAVELER (working title) from Square Enix, Shovel Knight: King of Cards from Yacht Club Games and Runner 3 from Choice Provisions.

Nintendo Switch hits 10 million sales worldwide since its launch on 3rd March 2017, with a range of award-winning games including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey already available, with plenty more experiences to come in 2018.

Well well well.
10 million.

Not bad Nintendo, not bad.

How many of those 10 million are actually in use?
Unlike the Wii and Wii U, which sat on the shelves of families, gathering dust.
Mostly the Wii.

It's pure entertainment for me to see how high they can push that number. I'm a Nintendo fan, I would've bought a Switch for the promise of new Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon anyways, but now with it selling so well, I'm hoping the library expands to even more genres and audiences. I love the portability! The Switch fits with my lifestyle (always busy, not always at home) and so I'm willing to take a graphical hit on some games if it means I can play them anywhere and ultimately have more time to play them. Also, some great games out this year. Breath of the Wild is now my most favorite Zelda game, and definitely my GOTY pick, Super Mario Odyssey was a fun romp, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has been fantastic so far. Plus, ton of great indie games! Golf Story was great, loved VOEZ with all the songs unlocked, the Switch breathed new life into Stardew Valley for me, a game which I never had time to play on PC but can now play on my morning commute and actually enjoy, etc. etc.

I wanna see if they can hit their revised 17 million goal by March. Three months to sell 7 million? Seems dicey, but I think 14 million could be a reasonable target.

Hoping for a Nintendo Direct soon to tell us about what to look forward to in 2018. I have Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest 11, and possibly a new Pokemon game that I'm hyped for next year so far.

Crazy that the library is so small and yet they've sold so many. Only 2 games I'm interested in are mk8 and oddysee but I already have one of the 2 on Wii U, so it's hard to justify the purchase.
And the wrestling game on the switch wwe 2k18 is just the same as Xbox and PS4, in the good days we had 3 unique titles every year on each console.

But... they... are... devices
By that logic, my pants are a device. My [ censored ] is a device. My keys are a device. Your mom is a device. :wtf:

It is a poor descriptor and just irks of "speaking much without saying a damn thing." They are nebulous, intentionally vague, and only serve to confuse and misdirect. Little wonder so many marketers use it religiously.

Makes me wonder if you're not whining just to whine.. By definition the switch is a gaming device.. Whether you like it or not.

No, i don't like it. It's also awkwardly a perfect alliteration of Nintendo's mindset, of wanting to have it both ways. Not strong enough to compete as an actual console, but trying to assert its dominance in one market (handhelds) to influence its position in another.

As for my gripe with the term, it breaks down like this.
Phone store staff: "we can get you set up with a new device"
Me: "device? We're talking about a phone here."
Phs: "... Well, yes, but--"
Me: "so are you saying i could keep my number if i put it in a tablet? Or a laptop?"
Phs: "no, but--"
Me: "then why are you calling it a device if you aren't treating them equally? They're not."

And it's always sales people abusing the hell out of saying it as a device, instead of what it is... A phone. Or in the case of the Switch, a console.
