looking to get a 2ds for my son (don't trust him having a hinge)

Can't find a recent thread on this, still CFW ready out of the box?
Anything I need to know?

But you trust him not to shatter the screen of the 2DS? :P
I think a 3DS is far more sturdy. They don't have fragile hinges like the DS Lite did, and the clamshell design protects the screen.
I would just get a 3DS/New 3DS/New 2DS for him.

The screen (covers) are plastic. He has been using the Wii U for a couple months and is doing really well, he just tends to be forceful.
I have very little concern for the screen he's been using my iPhone for years and has an iPad mini.
He just turned 4 and is a giant 99% height off the charts head size and has ridden every ride at Disney world including the tower of terror and Everest. He doesn't realize his strength and muscles stuff open... it's the hinge that concerns me.

The new 2DS XL hinge is not wobbly.

Some people said that about the N3DS/XL too though. I've used 3 different systems, and they are all wobbly. Maybe you just don't notice it as much, or maybe you got lucky?

https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/5/15549048/new-nintendo-2ds-xl-video-photos-preivew-vs-3ds-xl

My one misgiving about the device is the hinge, which can be adjusted between three positions: one at a right angle, one completely flat, and one somewhere in between. But each of the positions has a little give to it that can cause the screen to wobble when moved around. I know, small problem.

Also this video 4 minutes in:

this little flippy flap, I'm not super into it

Just an FYI
New blue 2ds (old non hinged) bought at Target 1 hr ago 11.3.0.xxu
Modded and getting ready to hand off to my big little guy.
Wow has the process gotten dead simple and quick (done 5 previous 3ds' years ago with the last being when the Mario Black Friday new 3ds was released)

Its not? I'm so confused now after seeing another video. x.x
It wobbles with about a half inch of travel when it's in a locked position - like all hinged 3ds's. It doesn't flop all the way down or up unless you suddenly jerk it hard.

This all-too-common complaint some people make drives me crazy. Do you all have Parkinson's Disease or something? Or are you guys making love to a light socket while gaming? :P

lol I'm not sure if this compliant happens to be on the same wavelength (or much lesser) than complaining about TN screens.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I wish the n3ds XL had a top screen that looked like a Great Value iphone. fjfkjfjkkjfkjf

Isn't that normal? Otherwise the hinge would break really easily.

All I know is the DS lite and the original O3DS didn't have 'normal' wobbly hinges, and I never broke one on them. And yeah, I did mean forward back movement. So now you're saying it does wobble?

Also, I think of it as an issue, because it really means you can only use the console in one position, looking down at it. You can't really hold it level with your face, or kids can't lie down on the floor with their elbows on the floor, because you'd constantly be aware of the wobble, it's pretty annoying. I picked up a DS lite the other day, and it was heaven compared to my N3DS

But why complain about it now, when 3DS consoles are all like this? Also, you see loads of DS consoles with broken hinges for sale, but I've never seen a 3DS console with a broken hinge. And it doesn't wobble when you're just holding it - you have to actually shake it to see it move. You'd have to have Parkinson's to have a problem with playing it.

I've bought two refurb 2DSs from Nintendo's online store in the last two weeks. They definitely don't update them before they send them out. One arrived with 11.2 and one came with 8.1.

If you're ok with refurbs, this is a more likely way for you to get one with an older firmware than buying new.

No actually, it's a more likely way of getting one with 11.3/11.4 installed.

Nintendo updates to whatever the latest firmware is at the conclusion of the refurb process, they are then put in storage to be sold.

So a (small) number of refurbs have 11.4 installed, and from this point on all refurb'd consoles will have 11.5 installed.

Whereas all new/sealed old2DSes are guaranteed to be below 11.4, way below in most cases.

If OP isn't prepared to buy a new old2DS, then a refurbished one is definitely an option, but it's still a gamble.

You should update the 360 to newest dash before RGHing it yes. But not a big deal if you don't, you can install new dash/avatar updates after. It's just easier to do it auto online before, instead manual offline after.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.

I remember seeing the very first episode back in the day, and have watched every episode since. I used to set my VCR to record them even, shows how long ago.

South Park is great cause they always touch on relavent issues going on today, and make something funny out of it.

@BigOnYa were you always up to date on the current events and issues of the time or were there issues that you first found out thru south park

Most of the time yea I knew, I watch and read the news regularly, but sometimes the Hollywood BS stuff, like concerning actors slip by me. I don't follow most Hollywood BS (example: the Kardasians)

  • S @ salazarcosplay:
@BigOnYa there were relevant issues before south park was made, that's why i think a south park prequel/spinoff would be great. Randy and his friends in their child hood

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, like them running in high school together, getting into stuff, and how they got hitched and had kids. And how the town of South Park was back then compared to now. That would be cool to see.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@salazarcosplay if they made a prequel, it would still be about current issues, cause it doesn't make sense to make it about stuff that happened 30 years ago that nobody cares about anymore
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's too late
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the older south park episodes about particular issues usually age poorly since the topic is no longer relevant

an exception is giant douche vs turd sandwich, that's always relevant :P
