Read the damn OP before commenting. It's right there, it explains everything. Why are you even commenting in a thread you haven't read the topic of.

This morning, Microsoft served a federal court order and seized 22 of our most commonly used domains because they claimed that some of the subdomains have been abused by creators of malware.

Literally the third sentence in explains what Microsoft has to do with this site.

Also this doesn't affect you. So your OS of choice is completely irrelevant. It affects No-IP (which then in turn affects customers because they are the provider of the service).

This...honestly isn't that difficult of a subject.

Can someone please explain how Microsoft was able to do this?
You can't just "take down" something without having access or DDoS attacking...

You should probably read the entire OP.

you are not understanding what i mean.

yes this affects me. i am a linux user, and i use no ip services...

this is equivalent of: you have a company, someone is spamming your mailbox with stuff. so you take down the national post office?

this is something like nintendo did (closing down the nintendo letter service because Child P...) but in the nintendo case, nintendo OWNED that service they could close it whenever they want.

in the case of no ip, microsoft doesn't own anything from no-ip and its not related. something is wrong here, i dont see how they can shut down a service they are not related which doesn't affect them directly...

i am aware of creatores of malware abuse no ip, but its not right of another random company decides to shut it down...

Microsoft acted AS AN AGENT OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT in this case. Their Computer Crimes Division is no different than any other kind of private investigatory body.

To put it in the easiest to understand terms: Microsoft was deputized to handle this case.

damn so we have Microsoft doing the US Fed's dirty work? talk about persistance to police the internet

There are any number of industry bodies and companies that lend their services and skills to criminal investigations, usually it is to help their fields (and MS does really want less malware out there), occasionally they abuse such things to start a civil case (less investigatory powers in civil world).

No this is the equivalent of seeing someone sent something dodgy through the postal service, staking out the sorting office machines by monitoring them for known addresses and then instead of leaving the rest alone you redirect it to the furnace because you hosed up your tap.
Likewise it was not Microsoft shutting things down but the Federal government, which in turn gave the rest over for Microsoft to run for the time being. OS is irrelevant as TCP-IP is not of any one OS. Microsoft may have been at the paper issuing, may have done the investigation and may have been present when someone asked a judge to sign the relevant papers but it was still the US federal government's power at work.

I saw that...
They make it sound like MS "forced" them to take it down.
In reality, they decided to take down their servers after being threatened.
No, they handed over the server/domain access after the federal government issued an order to do so, probably after an investigation heavily involving and partially led by MS. MS just cocked up the handling of it all.

that's more what I mean they abuse the Power they have for stuff like Piracy cases where it's more of a Company thing besides that the Civil fine Maximum is like $15,000+15 years federal (Max) (if I remember correctly) but I have seen fines of up to $500,000 to $1,000,000 an unrealistic number they Expect you to pay (yeah unless you win the Lotto isn't gonna happen

I haven't been gaming for such a long time. Been mostly busy with sleep, hardware tinkering and checking GBAtemp frequently.

It's going alright thanks :) I know what you mean with gaming time. It's precious where I can get it these days.

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.

Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though

@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.

Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
