Hey, I have a serious problem while trying to startup a computer running Windows Vista. The reason is I was re-adjusting the Partition accurately, the total is 682 GB (except EISA Configuration partition). I normally cannot Shrink the Volume any further past -64 GB using Microsoft's Disk Management, so I used MiniTool Partition Wizard to Shrink -121 GB off C:\ drive to have E:\, then it Rebooted to do the rest. As soon I got to the Desktop after Startup, I opened up MiniTool Partition Wizard again to check. I went to Disk Management to create a Simple Volume like normal.

I realised that the several .exe apps are crashing as it is inaccessible even I'm currently on C:\. I decided to use MiniTool Partition Wizard to Extend C:\ drive again with an Unallocated partition on E:\ shown on the menu then it had to Reboot, but I forgot that I already created a Simple Volume with Disk Management earlier!

MiniTool Partition Wizard got confused about already created Simple Volume while Extending with the "Unallocated" partition.

And boom, I am stuck on Startup Repair. It fails to automatically fix.

My dad had to reset the computer to Factory Settings and lost all the stuffs. I really want the Files and stuffs back... I have TestDisk / Dos/Win9x and Rufus, but I'm not sure if will do correctly.

How can I Recover the Files without having to replace with the whole previous Partition state over with TestDisk? Because Windows Vista has already setup.

Edit: Nevermind! The personal Files such as my mum's Photos and dad's Movies are still there after Reinstall Windows!!!!! I just checked those in "Backup" Folder under ACER (C:\)!!

I've used Recuva in the past to recover deleted files, though I'm not sure how messed up your Hard Drive is from all of the partition modifications you made...

Why didn't you make a backup before reinstalling the OS? Try making a backup of the the part where the files were stored in and run some recovery programs on it.

Depending on how the operating system was "reset to factory settings," most of your files might have been overwritten, thus permanently erased. If a program like Recuva doesn't work, it's unlikely anything else will. In the future, make sure you have external and/or cloud backups of anything you cannot afford to lose.

It was too late, my dad wouldn't have to let me as it might screw up more.
you messed up pretty badly, there's no hope for file recovery.
Man... this sucks. I really am an idiot.

I forgot to ask: Did you check the C:\Windows.old folder? All your old files get put in there, depending on the type of OS-reinstallation.

Talk to your dad about getting a cloud backup service like crashplan...since I do all the IT stuff in the family, I was getting annoyed at family members screwing up and losing data. So I got the 10 computer plan have I have done maybe 6 restores since 2014.

Free file-backup services like Google Drive typically suffice.

What the fuck, Windows Vista?

Burn the computer to the ground before it kills your family.

One could also upgrade to or clean install Windows 7 SP1, activate it with a loader, and then take advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade offer.
