Hacking how to update my r4i gold?

I have 3ds firmware 4.1.0 and i want to upgrade to 4.1.5 to use estore to dload some demos.

So, i need to update my r4i gold first before updating the 3ds firmware right?

I have downloaded and extracted WOOD R4 V1.56 Released. (2012-12-25)

when i run r4i on my 3ds and look at the info, i have these:
wood akmenu 1.56
HW:R4i Gold 3DSb
Sys:NDSi 1.44&3DS4.3.0-10

I am on latest r4i gold? can i safely upgrade my 3ds firmware? It's confusing(on http://www.r4ids.cn/r4i-download-e.html#d1, i don't know if i need to install the patches??)

Wood isn't firmware, it's not for DSi/3DS compatibility.

Q - People talk about a cart's firmware/menu/OS, what are these?
A - The cart's firmware is the software that's installed onto the cart itself (not your MicroSD). This is generally only updated to bypass a new 3/DS/i firmware that attempts to block flash carts. On the other hand, the menu/OS is what you run on your MicroSD that lets you choose and launch ROMs and homebrew. This is sometimes called the "firmware", but in reality it's not, it's the OS (Operating System) of the cart. In general a cart type will have it's own OS. For example Acekards use AKAIO, the Supercard DSTWO uses EOS, some R4 models can use Wood, and so on and so forth. YSmenu is a special menu/OS that's intended to run on as many carts as it can. Having a cart that gets updates to it's menu/OS is important, as this is what provides fixes for new games, and new features.

thx man! will check the tutorials! are the demos on the e-store worth it actually lol? i have some demos on the PSN on my vita and some demos made me actually want to buy the full game

Idunno'. It's safer to just stop updating unless you really need to for a game you already bought.
