How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .
Step 5 - Install a d2x Custom IOS to enable New Wii Games. Install DiosMios to Play Gamecube Games.
(Spoilers Window) Add 'n Play Wii/Gamecube Games + Update USB Loader GX (req for Gamecube games)
Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-hdd making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Important! Skip 10:00 - 13:00 in the video. We will not use Wbfs Manager instead we use WiiBackupManager to add Wii games, explained in Part 5 - spoiler windows - Play Wii/Gamecube games from USB-hdd.

PS: Just so you know - I tried it myself. If you WiiWare wasn't working through emuNAND. Look in USBLoader GX - Settings - Credits, if your using the 'cIOS249-d2x-v10-beta52' it will not work! Go ahead and install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad using Step 5 in this guide. Then Wiiware works. :)

Fix Blackscreen with VC in emuNAND
Happens when playing USA games with a European Wii. Open selected VC game - 'Settings' - 'Loader Settings'in 'Video Patch 'select Force NTFC. Press Save. Now it should work. :)

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

I seem to be having a similar issue... When using DMLizard, I'm not getting the IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad or WiiMod files. Are these suppose to be obtained elsewhere?
As with step 4 , step 5 requires a download from youtube link to obtain the files.

download link is http://ul.to/u7fv52ry
there y will find the ios249...d2x b47 wad.

Alright so I got homebrew installed per your previous video's instructions. Now following this video step by step, I installed BootMii as boot2 just like you showed. Then chose return the main menu and exited the program. Each time I try this step the Wii goes back to the homebrew channel and does not reboot into the BootMii menu where I can create the backup. I have tried installing it and running it as in IOS through home brew however the video output of the Wii goes blank when I try it that way. Any thoughts on how i can get the boot2 install to load correctly.

I have four questions I want to ask, if anyone could please answer them for me it'd be greatly appreciated.

First off, to make sure, these:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)
are the ONLY requirements for everything in this thread right? (I haven't read all of the related post(s) yet, I will once I actually do this.)

Second: In the requirements it specifies that I need a certain version of the Wii Console to play Gamecube games. Is there a model number to go with this? I was looking at getting this one from Amazon. I'm thinking any console besides the "Mini Wii" (the one that doesn't play Gamecube games) is fine, is that right?

Third: Has Nintendo done anything to patch this? Also, I know they took down WiFi services for Wii games. On their website it says that it only affects games and not other services, I was wondering if anyone can confirm this? (So that I will know whether or not I would be able to update my new Wii to 4.3).

Lastly: I was looking at SD cards that weren't SDHC or SDXC and they're kind of hard to find. I found this one, would that one work for everything in this thread and does it have enough space? Is there a better one I could buy?

First : Yes, its all requirements.
Second : Basicly, if you can insert a Gamecube controller on the top, you can play gamecube games.
Third : You can update to latest version (4.3) without any issues to homebrew setup. 4.3 is highly recommended.
Fourth : Ebay got what you need or most computer shops. Get SD is very recommended

yes. Press home button on your Wiiremote in Homebrew Channel. Then you can goto backup Menu.

Hey Stephanie, sorry I did not make this more clear. When I pressed the home button in homebrew to open that menu then clicked on "Launch BootMii" the Wii video goes blank, the disc drive light flashes and nothing happens even after waiting several minutes. If I try to boot the Wii with the SD card containing the BootMii app after installing it as boot2, I get the same result: No video. I have tried uninstalling boot2 and IOS BootMii and using one at a time several times to see if either one would function. Still the same result. I checked to make sure the BootMii files are correctly installed on the SD card and they are. I noticed in a different thread that the .ini file is configured in a different way than someone else's. Do you think thats the issue? Or what other ideas?

sorry i meant how can you tell if bootmii is installed as boot2.

i just realized i renamed bootmii to bootmii2 on the sd card... thats why i did not see it load up. but still would like to know how to determine what i have installed. and if there is ever a need to update bootmii.

Rename the bootmii2 back to bootmii, open the bootmii.ini and change bootdelay=0 to bootdelay=5, insert your sd card and start the wii. if you can see bootmii you have boot2.

 I've been trying this for 8 hours and usb loader keeps having problems:/ it either says the usb isn't formatted, which it is, or it freezes when installing a game to the drive, or just crashes and takes me to the menu. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, using wiiflow, reformating the drive but it's always something. Help plz (now it just won't install them). (Same problems with wiiflow)

I'm having a problem with USB loader GX. In the past when I'd load a game, wither wii or gamecube, occasionally it would lead to a black screen and I couldn't turn the system off either. Then I'd load up the wii and go to select a different game (that was already working) and it got the black screen. Somehow the other games would be "infected". So I just deleted all the games of the usb drive and transferred them over again, and that seemed to solve the black screen issue for a while.
But today I started a VC game (Paper Mario ) and I get the black screen again. And sure enough now the other games that were previously working now don't work.

And to make it worse, usb loader gx now freezes when I check or uncheck which games to show (wii, gc, emunand). I can move the screen left and right but nothing happens when I click on anything else and I can't turn the power off, I have to unplug it.

re-install usb loader gx . use dmlizard which u get in step 5 .

also blackscreen is usually because your region (wii) is diff then thr game.

I thaught black screens were usualy due to hdd compatibility, especially with dios mios when everything is well set(fat32,32ksectors,partition primary&active); since for wii backup launch usbloadergx has a good working automatic setting...

Whatever i would like to thank you for your good tutorials.
i have an issue with monster hunter 3G, everything was going fine (wii 4.3, updated hack) and one day i just got an ingame black screen when i start game from the first screen menu.

I am also interest in playing smash brawl onlie on private server and i would like to ask how is the connection do i need to have a very hight band(optic fib)?

thank you again

What usb device do you use? some isnt compatible with Wii's.

I forget the brand (it's micron, lexar) but it is compatible as it started working with cfg usb loader, but now my problem is just the installing, and cfg usb loader wont always load the games:( edit: I think I know why it wasn't loading it I have to plug it into the computer and tell it to continue without scanning the usb then it appears to work, will update if it doesn't work next time. But still the installing:/

I will surprise you, i don't plan to buy a wiiU soon because of money, i am a cameroonian an video games products are very very expenssive in my contry.
Countries in black Africa are not consider in the commercial word map so there is no official distribution. the resellers have to buy on europeans et asian market to provide us and the final price are just disgusting.
Whatever i just discover myself some little talent on SSBBrawl with Snake (absent in SSB4)...and i wish i could improve my level online if it doesn't need to much internet wideband since internet quality is very abd here (yeah black africa again, i know it could sound like a forced misery but it's just the truth).

Anyway thank you for the advise, i just found an old guitar accessory for guitar hero wii in a flea market, i hope it works...probality the only one hanging under the sahara....
Are you familier with guitar hero issue with uSB Loader GX?

I'm wondering... I saw other guides and it is said there that it is okay to use SDHC, while some indicated to use only a standard SD card. standard one are already rare. Is it really okay to use SDHC?
