Help with Windows batch script

I have a folder with hundreds of files that are alphabetically ordered. What I want to do is add numbers before each file name like this:

1.File
2.File
3.File

I could do it manually but being the lazy person that I am, I figured a batch script would be faster. Too bad I suck at everything scripts related. Can someone help me out please?
