Hacking HDD not being detected by Wii anymore

Okay so here's the situation; I helped my friend softmod his Wii, and he's been using the USBLoader GX forwarder in combination with a Toshiba 1TB hard drive flawlessly up until yesterday. Now his Wii is unable to detect the external drive, no matter what application I use (the hard drive itself isn't the problem, i tried it out on my own Wii and it works)
I think he kind of fiddled around with some stuff in the HBC, but he's unsure what exactly did it; and I can't really seem to figure out the cause...

Any ideas/solutions on what it could or couldn't be, so I can rule out any extreme options like removing all the homebrew on his Wii? (maybe an incompatible IOS?)

i'd reinstall whatever flavor of waninkoko's custom ios 38 floats your boat...that's the key to letting a wii and and a usb hard drive make sweet sweet love, i believe.
