Hi DinohScene!

First of all thanks for this helpful guide. I once possessed a Phat Xbox 360 and thinking about buying one again in the upcoming future.

Basically I just want to use backups of Xbox 360 games and XBLA games - all the other stuff with online does not matter to me at all. What sort of Xbox 360 would you recommend?

[AGE]

Since JTAG and RGH are more or less the same thing, it does not really matter which age my console is.. right? Or is this connected with the time of booting? (Sorry if I read over that if already mentioned)

From what I read I can count Zephyr out, cause it's hard to archieve. Opus for the reason of RRoD repair only.
Leaving Xenon, Falcon and Jasper. Would you agree?

[DASH]

1888, 2241, 4532, 4548 seem all unlikely. Dashes below 14717 (7371 / 14699) should be fine. Is the time to boot really that worse in higher dashes?

[ODDE]

Since I plan using an HDD only for playing backups, I would go with this. And here comes the part where I must dissamble my Xbox 360.. which I can't do. So the only choice I have here is to send it to someone who can. You took an Xkey as an example. Is this the best solution?

[JTAG / RGH]

Added to a JTAG you'll probably want to prevent it from dieing quickly so setting the fans to a minimum of 75-80% in FSD*

..so the JTAG kills my console slowly?

And that's the other part where I mus send my console away I guess.

Did anything happen on the R-JTAG side?

You cannot play XBLA/XBLIndie/DLC or use Avatar items downloaded from the web on a retail 360, if it's not released on disc then you're only able to boot that stuff on hardware hacked consoles!

Retail = unhacked?

Thanks in advance! =)

For phatties, the best 360's are Falcons, Jaspers and Kronosses, Slims would be Trinities.
As in the realative easy to hack and in terms of good boottimes.

Yes. RGH1 on a Falcon is comparable to JTAG.
Me first RGH install, with the first revision of the Coolrunner was in me own Falcon console.
The thig boots every 1st glitch cycle.
Sometimes it cycles 2 and boots.
RGH2 on a Falcon is terrible.
Jaspers have a 15 second wait for boot usually.
However, with the new CR4 which is coming out soon, all the boottimes of every console should be comparable to JTAG (instaboot)

Dash 7371 and below is vulnerable to JTAG.
14699 and below is vulnerable to RGH1
147xx and up can be done with RGH2.

Xkey only boots retail media.
ISO images of discs that you can purchase in the stores.
It won't boot homebrew nor boot XBLA media.

Nope.
It's the 360 that kills itself.
Retail consoles run the fans on a low RPM, letting the console heat up more.
JTAG/RGH consoles have the ability to set the RPM of the fans to a higher number, cooling the console more.
Due to the absence of lead in the solder balls under the RAM GPU CPU and HANA, the connections will break sooner (constant heat/cool cycles)
Lowering the temperature in the 360 prevents the chips from heating up much, which increases the lifespan of the solderballs ;]

R-JTAG is phased out in favor of the upcoming CR4.
Less solder connections.

Yep, retail consoles can't run homebrew.
They can only run legit discs.
Hardware hacked machines don't need signatures nor DRM checks.
Which can in term let you play XBLA/Homebrew etc.

If you're doubting about ODDE's and RGH, I'd say go for the RGH if you really do not care about XBLive.

No prob~

I've read up a bit using this post and a few others but I'm not exactly sure what I need and I don't want to buy anything more than I need.
Does anyone feel up to TELLING me what I need? :)

What I want to do:
Have an external USB hard drive with an absolutely silly amount of games on it that I can select and play without having to get up off of the couch.
(The 360 will be airgapped and will have no network access at all.)

What I have:
1) Falcon v2. I think? Date is 2008-10-13 with HDMI. Power connector is solid bar over three sockets over three sockets.
2) Phillips Lite-on DG16D2S (yellow wires!)
3) System version is 2.0.16756.0

What I need to know:
1) What will I be able to play? ISO's? Live Arcade games?
2) Is there a maximum limit to the external USB drive I can use?
3) Will there be problematic gameplay slowdown from using an external USB?
4) What on earth must I buy to make this all happen?
5) What have I not asked but totally should have asked so that I don't #$*# this all up?

Thank you! Good night!

I'd personally just switch out the internal HDD for a 2TB one.
More stable and quicker then USB.

1a. RGHing will allow you to play extracted or converted 360 games, DLC, XBLA some original Xbox games and homebrew.
1b. ODDE will allow you to play games via a external HDD, only games, no other things.
2. If going for RGH, I highly recommend upgrading the internal drive, nothing but benefits, if ODDE, 2TB is the max, NTFS formatted.
3. USB is a bit slower then SATA, however ODDE's can only use USB where RGH consoles can use SATA.
4a. RGH, a Coolrunner 4 + JRprogrammer, this also needs soldering!
4b. ODDE, well you need an Xkey and a way to extract your DVD key, financially, I'd pay someone to extract your DVD key for you as you might need specific hardware to extract the DVD key.

Personally, I'd recommend RGHing.
If you cannot solder then bring your 360 to a modshop.
They will install the chip and flash a hacked NAND to it.
Once that's done, you can follow me guide on installing FSD from the 360 tutorial section and set up yer freshly hacked box.
Upgrading the internal HDD is easy, just a matter of unscrewing the HDD caddy and replacing the stock 20/60/120 GB with a 1/2TB 2.5 inch laptop harddisk.

If you're keen on using USB, then just plug in a FAT32 formatted external drive and follow the tutorial on setting up FSD.

Thanks for the guide. Do you know when you'll get time to update it with CR4 XL info? Also, it would be good to cover the DemoN too.

Whenever the CR4 gets released.
Then I'll finalize the RGH section to only cover the CR4.
Demon I might cover.

JTAG will also be finalized when I work on the RGH section.

Drop a post here when you are done so we know :)

I really appreciate your work of writing this!

I also have bought a 4gb 360 with mfr date of August 2011. I know that I will need a new cr4 and nand r/w kit for it - I am looking for a step by step installation guide for the hardware. In reading the different material in the forums I am a bit confused since they seem to be geared towards the older boards and different equipment.

Any help with this mobo (which I believe is a corona v6) and the new cr4 plus the new nand kit would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I'll be finishing up as soon as I installed a CR4 meself.
as for now, TX forums are the best place to look for tutorials.

I think it's a Glossy slim as the Coronas didn't really appear in 2011, especially not the v6's

Cheers c:
Yep, I'd go for a CR4.
RGH 2 on Falcons are (in me personal experience) difficult consoles to boot.

CR4 is the latest chip that TX has made, fewer wires and better performances ;]

DinohScene, first of all I would like to thank you for all the support you've been giving to everyone.

I've read your tutorial and because my lack of knowledge, some things weren't crystal clear to me. I would like your support.

My hardware:
Xbox 360 slim (4GB, no hdd)
mfr:31/10/2011 (corona 2 if not mistaken)
Dashboard - 2.0.16767.0
DVD drive: DG-16D5S -> FW ver:1175

So far, my daughter never played or used the XBlive, but we never know when it might be cool to have access to it. So I'd like to have some instructions to avoid having any trouble.

There are 2 main objectives (must have):
1 - Run backed up games DVDs
2 - Add a HDD (not a expansive xbox one)

Nice to have:
Run the games from the HDD
Be able to use the XBlive with original copies only.

If I understood correctly the easiest way to run backed up games is to change the DVD driver firmware.
And to ADD the HDD, it is necessary to buy a WD compatible drive.

The RGHed option is only if I want to add the run from HDD option?
