Anguna: Warriors of Virtue
Many Homebrew projects aim to achieve a final build yet programmers sometimes bit off more than they can chew, so-to-speak. Anguna was an ambitious project from the start as its goal was to build a complete top-down action-adventure RPG for the GBA. Nathan Tolbert spent 3 years of his free time achieving this goal and released the first public build in the summer of 2008.
Anguna has many “Zelda-like” similarities that will appeal to anyone only who enjoyed SNES/GBA era over-head RPGs. The game consists of a large overworld populated by enemies, hidden paths, treasure, and 5 well thought-out dungeons. The dungeons are incredibly fun to explore as they offer numerous hidden rooms and passageways. There are plenty of items to discover as well, some of which act as power-ups, while others simple add to the player’s arsenal. Zelda fans will feel right at home with the bow & arrow, lantern, red health potion, and power ring. Items such as the “boots of flight” and the bear traps will add elements of strategy, while dynamite is used to make new paths and take out larger enemies.
Thanks to the debugging efforts of the Homebrew community, Anguna was eventually updated and released for the DS. The DS port is the same game but makes use of the second screen to actively display the information found on the GBA versions pause menu.
Anguna seems very familiar due to its influences, yet its cleverly designed gaming elements make for a unique experience. If you are a fan of RPGs and GBA era graphics then Anguna is one Homebrew not to be missed!
