So what do you think of this decision for the battle system?

so, they thought the best route to remake the game was to completely change its genre? Whatever they're smoking, I do not want it. We're getting into "re-imagining" and "a ff7 scenario but actually it's ff15" territory now.

So what kind of game is it now? Super Paper Mario style rather than Paper Mario style?

think kingdom hearts or ff15 replacing the system of ff6. I dunno, feels weird.

so basically it's FF XV with FF 7 skin! this will not end well. I hope they could find a middle ground.

Welcome to like a year ago when they first announced the FF VII remake and everyone was outraged when they announced it would be action combat not turn based.
How is this news? This has been known for AGES.

    Kids say the darndest things.
Completely change the genre, uh, derp?
It's going from a turn-based RPG to an action RPG.
That's not completely changing the genre. That's changing the archaic dead battle system. The only company that really seems to get turn-based right anymore is Atlus. SE is very wise to ditch it for a more modern system.

I actually would love to see them modernize the turn based genre but it seems they are gonna just do another FF 15ish thing. Ehh i guess

Did you read the quote? There was a misinterpretation in a previous interview and he's clarifying things here. If fans of this much awaited game were not aware of the director's comment the way he meant it, they would still be interpreting things wrong. Is this news enough?

This doesn't bother me. It can be done well. The episodic thing is the dream killer here.

I'm quite happy about the battle system. I really liked it in Type-0 and Final Fantasy XV. If you don't like the Action RPG genre then just play the original Final Fantasy VII.

Overall I'm very happy about Square Enix making a modern remake of the game.

They needed to do both, a new system and a classic mode option. Seems like it would of been easily doable.

FF7 is not a worthy sequel.

I said it. I'll take Gau over Cloud any day.
FF6 is more epic (to be fair meteor dropping is very common in ff), Character development is sufficient but not terribly long, and a master piece that unlike ff5 has no true sequel (called Bravely Second).

Dragon Quest keeps the turn based system and manages to sell more than FF (in Japan that is).
A lot of other devs also keep turn based combat when the game is supposed to be a Turn Based RPG, while it's the same genre, it is a different subgenre.
Most of the time I would rather have a good turn based game than a crappy action rpg, which is usually the case.

Not really since we already knew the combat would be action based as stated months ago near the games announcement.
Not sure what misconception there would be when he just confirmed what was confirmed months ago. There was already a huge uproar and petition to change it from action to the traditional system.

I never said devs don't use it, just their games are worse for it. Dragon quest is pretty damn boring. But it does have a large following from back when it was relevant. Pretty much why I never touch it. Atlus is the only one currently doing turn based right. Granted Bravely Default/Second are also pretty solid but only because they happened upon a pretty interesting and unique mechanic that hadn't been done before. If you removed it it was a very bog standard turn based RPG and would've failed.
While FF7 was one of the best final fantasys because of materia, it still was pretty bog standard and boring as hell by todays standards. We already have the original to play for the boring turn based system. Might as well try something new and modern in the remake.

What's not news to you might be news for others. And it appears to be the case here, considering the comments (other than yours). Nevertheless, a little reminder does no harm.
