One of the founders of id Software, Tom Hall, has just started a Kickstarter campaign for a platform game creation tool called "Worlds of Wonder". Tom Hall who helped develop such gems as Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Deus Ex as well as a couple of Duke Nukem games (the good ones) and Terminal Velocity.

The tool will also include a "spiritual successor" to Commander Keen entitled "Secret Spaceship Club" , which is a terrible name for a game but it also demonstrates what this tool can do.

The Kickstarter campaign is off to a slow start trying to reach it's 400,000 goal but it does have 25 days left. Intended platforms for this are iOS and Android tablets, Ubuntu Linux, Mac, and Windows and users can share their levels across those platforms.

    Uhh, no thanks.

I've seen a zillion of Game Makers at this point, none of which "deserved" a Kickstarter to start them up. Kickstarter stopped being a funds-searching method and began being an advertisement tool, or at least that's my take on it.

It's a good thing he left his old company - This is less id and more superego.

ID was built from Super Egos, goes with the territory. :)

As for me, I like Tom's quirky sense of humor andcreativity. I don't think any game engine will ever quite replace a DOOM Source port for me, but I love to see attempts made to create more. Seems to me that there are many out there, but many of them still have horrible collision detection and this and that...

...unless that is a fault of the game designers behind the games I tried.

Either way, it harkens back to the old days when Amiga has all sorts of game creation kits, so I kinda like that! Go Tom! :)

Hey...well...I kinda thought it looked...you know...passable at best.

I made a fantastic Ninja Turtle game with Shoot-em-up Construction Kit on the C64. Never took to the Amiga version.

    400,000 to develop a 2D platformer editor?

what Nintendo spent to build SMW or SM64? I doubt that this platformer editor will cost that.

I did not realize the C64 had a construction set aside of the Pinball Construction Set and the Load Runner series. Very cool!

Can I see this game of yours?

    Humm.

I know they're pitching it as an ease-of-use, fill-in-the-blanks sort of thing to make it seem accessible, but lots of people (especially those with lots of money to toss around) will probably want much more than that. For what they're asking, this thing had better have a lot of room for customization and creativity! And I'm not just talking pre-made tile-swapping and jump-height value-changing. There's quite enough of those as it is!

In short, I do hope thing is more than the poopsy little level editor they're billing it as!

(Plus, I can't stand that Video Brinquedo-esque art style dasdffs)

This was something I did when I was probably 7 years so it's long gone but I did make it with Slap N Tickle Engine.

C64 had lots of game creating kits, some where extremely easy to make games out of.

Please...I can do this for free with Game Maker:

    WARNING! Spoilers inside!

Kickstarter is getting out of hand with over ambitious projects that could either be done for free, or already have free alternatives. This project seems extremely limited however, and I don't see why anyone would want to use it over Game Maker, Flash, etc.

I can't be the only one thinking that this looks really dull.

    HAHAHAHAHHAA NO

This is a load of bullshit, as has already been pointed out. $400,000 to do a limited version of what many engines do (and more) for free? Even Game Maker has drag-and-drop platform creation with scripting ability.

This is not a "platform creation tool", it's a new game with an in-game level editor and he's trying to advertise it as a "game creation tool" so people might feel justified backing $400,000 for his own dream 2D platformer.

    @Hadrian
It's actually called "Worlds of Wander". Pretty silly name.
