I want to get a xbox 360, but I wanna mod it so

1: what ways can I mod without soldering (opening the console is fine)
2: what is the best version of the system to mod to yield the best results (with xbox live and being able to play back ups)
3: after moding, is their a way around paying for xbox live? (sorry if this is not allowed to be mentioned)

1. Flash CFW to the DVD drive.
2.An older model with a BenQ Drive.
3.Not possible unless you pay for a stealth service while using a JTAG which is worse than just buying the year of Live.

I'd say get a Trinity Slim.
It's a glossy black one.

You're able to dump the DVD keys and install an Xkey (which allows you to use an external HDD) in the console.

For staying safe on Live with an Xkey, patch all your games with ABGX.

Flashing is possible but I don't really advice it anymore as it's tedious.

Do I need the disk drive to work to get Xkey on it? and which tutorial will be best for me?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

After a bit of looking, I want to know if theirs a 2nd method instead of Xkey. I dont want to spend money for a "middle man" (and for any xbox 360 since I don't have one yet but will after knowing the best route to take.)

Okay, after looking around, the cheapest option for me is to burn the copys and play them though DVD flashing. Is it easier to flash the phat or slim? or does it not matter at all?

@DinohScene Kind of hijacking the thread here, but what would be the best way to hack a phat 360 (likely Falcon) with a liteon drive? When I looked it up years ago it required opening the DVD drive and using a probe along with the right SATA chipset to obtain the key. I bought a SATA card with the right chipset back then but it seemed too much work/too risky to open the console and the drive up and poke it with a probe. Just wondering if it's gotten easier now since you seem to be the xbox 360 guru around these parts.

The right SATA chipset is still required + a probe for Liteons (phat) is still required to dump the FW yep.
As long as you probe MPX01, nothing bad can happen.
A probe is like a couple of quid luckily.

You could also MRA it but that requires trace cutting and soldering.

This is still working today, awesome!

I was worried it wouldn't work anymore being that it's years later - but exactly what I came looking for!

@DinohScene Since you seem to be knowledgeable is it possible to play backups from say a usb and if so how?

Only way is with a jtag or rgh, which requires soldering pins. You can't do anything like that just by simply plugging in a usb drive with some files on it like most Nintendo systems. Although xkey is a litte more simple I think but it still involves opening your console and tinkering with it.
