Granted, I've "had" the game on the Wii emulators for a while, but still it's heartening when Nintendo actually follows through and shows that they somewhat care about fans. I guess they read the Miiverse comments after all.

Still, I never expected them to do this, to actually release a game that often goes for >$80 on eBay.

Yes, many can argue that the people that wanted to play this game have already done it in "other" ways, since getting the actual cartridge is quite a challenge... but, this means that nintendo hasn't overlooked the vasts petitions made from some people in america. It also means that Europe finally gets the game in an official way.

And who knows, if there's enough interest in this one, they could go and localize mother 3.

The main stopper was probably legal reasons. Earthbound contains a fuckload of western pop culture references, including names of songs, and even music that starts with or contains snippets from copyrighted songs.

Whether they stopped caring, got the big permissions, or edited the game, we don't know yet.
