Back in the good old days of switch firmware 1.0 and 2.0, simplified and traditional Chinese support was available on the switch. As of 2.1 (I think, it was the update right after the day one update) they removed it. Does anyone here know if it was just removed completely from the switch or was moved to the Japanese version? Some games like Bomberman have support for it, others (like Mario Kart) removed it in a later update. I asked about five months ago (has it really been that long? wow.) and nobody knew why then. I am just wondering if someone here knows now.

Hey, I don't want to sound like a troll, but, since it seems you can use english, why does it mater that simplified and traditional Chinese support is removed ?

Well, perhaps he just wants to play it in Chinese. Sounds ok to me.

I mean, I can speak German, but for the sake of god I will do anything to avoid playing a game in German.
Leave me playing it in English, or in Spanish worst case scenario.

I can do fine with English, although I'd prefer Chinese. I do fine with Simplified, I'd just prefer Traditional if possible.

Switch OS never got Chinese as a system language option since 1.0, neither Simp. nor the Trad. Even the HK version consoles were just the JP version with UK style outlet, box still labels as JP version.

According to Nintendo, a new Taiwanese version will come out in December, which will also introduces Chinese localizations for certain games such as Zelda BotW through software update, but they didn’t say the OS will be translated.

I don’t expect them to add the Chinese to the system anytime soon in the future, since there aren’t officially CN version of the console in plan. (Just see how bad the CN version of 3DS went, basically no games.) And HK or TWN people were fine with the Japanese or English OS since long.

Guess the localization will be per game basis for now.

If you kept Chinese (either simp. or trad.) after 1.0, does it stay? or default to japanese?

I bought Switch since the initial launch, it was 1.0 and I haven’t notice there’s a Chinese system language nor does Nintendo’s document has ever mentioned there’s a Chinese language option. Either you remembered it wrong or I just missed it. But either way, there is no such option in Switch now nor it’s on Ninitendo’s timetable afaik.

Nintendo just announced a bunch of other games receiving Chinese support in the future. Given how localising a game is probably much more difficult than localising an operating system, I wouldn't be surprised if they officially added Chinese as a system language some time next year.

Here are a few other titles getting localisations:
    • Super Mario Odyssey
    • The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
    • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
    • Xenoblade Chronicles 2
    • Snipperclips Plus - November
    • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
    • Fire Emblem Warriors
    • Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

System Update 4.0 adds Chinese (Simplified or Traditional) and Korean as language options, however the system menu itself is not translated.
This option just makes games that support these languages auto-detect your setting and switch to Chinese when launched, the OS menu itself will still display in English.

Fortunately every toddler in China speaks English well enough to set up WiFi, manage data, and configure the system in general. /s

Ninty doesn't officially release Switch in China anyways, only in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Chinese would be angry if you said any of those two is not China.

If anyone besides the Chinese give a damn about what they say, they'd claim the own the US and Europe.

(And technically speaking while HK is now part of China and TW still not, both HK and TW use Chinese Trad., not Chinese Simp. I guess they might at some point release it in China. But no one cares.)
