The trailer shows carts, but what will that mean for Wii U backwards compatibility? And what about 3ds games... Will they be compatible, or will nintendo completely remove backwards compatibility. :(
I hope they keep 3ds working with it, but tbh I'm not really that interested in the system. Probs gonna buy just for the new pokemon games that'll come with it sometime next year.

if they get rid of backwards compatability, it would be the first in a long time, last console that wasn't was the gamecube.. and that was what, 2002?

i'm hoping at least the eshop has download versions of wii u games

Most likely Digital Downloads for everything backwards compatible like the eShop.
Although, i gotta admit going back to cartridges is a good option.
Optical media sucks when it comes to loading times, and cartridges nowadays can hold more than double the size of a Bluray disk.
So more space + Less loading times is the way to go.

No backwards compatibility is actually a good thing.
You can design the hardware with any technology you want, you aren't tied to this specific architecture or cpu model or that the controllers need to have certain characteristics or whatever.

And don't come with the bad excuse that you want to try some Wii U or 3DS games, because if you wanted to play those so badly you'll already have a Wii U or 3DS.
A more valid excuse but still an excuse is that you plan on selling the things, If you really liked your Wii U or 3DS you wont be selling them.

It's not a bad excuse, and that's why PCs are currently winning over consoles (among other things). When you get a game on PC, you know you will forever have it.
There is currently no official way to play your gamecube games on a decent TV. You can't find master system controllers anymore, and I imagine that someday, you won't find Wii U gamepads, or not at a decent price.

Retrocompatibility ensures that what you paid for remain accessible through time.

PC's are out of the equation, those are machines designed to do everything while consoles are made for a specific jobs with specific peripherals.
And still there are no official ways to play some old games on pc, is there a official way to play Jazz Jackrabbit or Jill of the Jungle without resorting to DOS emulators?? no. Can I go to any PC store and buy a floppy disk reader?? no. PC88 or PC98 software without emulators?? no.

Obsolescence is part of the evolution of electronics like it or not, and emulation is the only way you can preserve software that cannot be natively run on modern machines.

3DS backwards compatibility wouldn't work. No dual screen, no touchscreen, no 3DS, no motion controls, no cameras.
Its screen is larger (not ideal, but could work), it has a touch screen, 3D is not required in many circumstances, motion controls or lack thereof not confirmed, cameras or lack thereof not confirmed and not required in many circumstances.

Touch screen isn't confirmed. In fact it seems unlikely to have one. If it did they surely would've showed that. Plus you wouldn't be able to use touchscreen on the television.

They didn't show Amiibo support and yet it will have it...

Really we'll just have to wait until Nintendo says more or someone leaks information...
