no but least they don't try to make you pay for 2 internets, stop you from sharing your games or say they've taken bs anti piracy measures out but their still in there!

I thought the PS4 went paid online, MS went back on that (and in some ways it mirrors what goes in PC world) and yeah that anti piracy still being there was not ideal, has there been a good analysis/explanation of that yet?
On the other hand Sony's treatment of Geohot was hardly great and they have had some seriously questionable anti piracy approaches in their past (though more in their music divisions).

As for PS3 as a RPG machine.
Other than a handful of tales of titles, Ni no Kuni, white knight chronicles, Hyperdimension Neptunia and atelier series (all of which are good if you like that sort of thing but liking RPGs and liking that sort of thing are not mutually exclusive shall we say) is there much in it?

the only paid ps4/3 service that sony has as far as i know is playstationPlus which is pretty much like club nintendo but if you want to play someone online it's still free.

I thought PSN plus was a requirement for most online (basically everything not free to play) games on the PS4?

I imagine there would be many articles if it was changed but seen as most of those are from November I doubt that happened.

Get a PS4. The Xbone wants to be your all-in-one media center but since they'll have to come out with a next gen console again anyway in the next several years it doesn't really make sense if your focus is just gaming.

Yeah, you NEED PS+ to play online multiplayer on the PS4. Games that already require a subscription or are free anyway such as MMOs are exempt from this. PS+ does give you free games though.

I figure if you don't already know what you want, then hold off until those two consoles start to build actual reputations and decide which fits you. You've already got a Wii U and PC to keep you entertained in the mean time.

They announced it at E3. It's been known for at least 6 months at this point.

I mean, it's annoying, sure, but a) why wouldn't you have PS+ anyway, what with the free games and great discounts, b) it's still cheaper than Xbox Live, and c) like Arras said, not even every game requires it. F2P titles (like Warframe) and MMOs (like FF XIV) don't require a PS+ membership.

So you could, you know, dial down the dramatics just a little bit.

Honestly if you owned a PS3/Vita, had it rigged to the internet, and didn't already own PS+, then you weren't doing a very good job.

It's still the same PS+, it still gives you free games, it's now just a requirement for online multiplayer as well. The forced subscription isn't great but it's still a great service, although the PS4 freebies aren't exactly amazing right now (it's about one game per month but you still get all the PS3/Vita games). The PS4 selection will pick up once the games do.

The PS+ appreciation rate is said to be 95% as far as I remember, so this is a non-issue. If you're in the 5% that uses PSN and doesn't have PS+, it's time to catch up with all the great deals this ecosystem offers across all of Sony's gaming platforms. Remember that servers don't pay for themselves and on top of that, mandatory PS+ for online multiplayer allowed for slashing the system's price substantially. The system is still online regardless of whether or not you are a subscriber - you can browse the net, you can use online apps, you can use the PSN Store - you jus can't play multiplayer games with some exceptions.

b) it's still cheaper than Xbox Live

I thought when we went yearly/annual passes it evened out and even MS might beat them.
http://uk.playstation.com/psn/suppo.../PlayStation-Plus-frequently-asked-questions/
£40 for a year.

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5683082.htm
£35 for the year.

That said looking at
http://us.playstation.com/playstation-plus/
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox360/accessories/xboxlive/xboxlive12monthgoldsubcard
it does seem the xbone is $10 USD more at $60 USD

Similarly the wording is still a bit weasel like but MS seem to be doing the games thing as well but http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/live/

I am not inclined to pay for any form of online game service myself but hey.

This.

Although I will say that it does suck that I can no longer stream YouTube through my Xbox 360 now my XBL Gold subscription has expired. :/

In either case, it's less than $50 a year, which is no huge deal, and helps to boost ecosystem reliability (assuming they put money from the subscriptions into server maintenance). I would much rather pay $50 a year for a service that has really good uptime and reliability (downloading games and updates from Microsoft is super fast, Sony is still getting there) than have a free service that is hit or miss.
