Joystiq, the popular gaming blog that's been up for nearly 10 years, has been officially shut down by AOL with their recent "restructuring". Along with Joystiq, AOL is also closing the Apple news site TUAW. Nearly 150 people total are being laid off, a good 20 of them being from Joystiq.

Both Joystiq and TUAW's content are now being folded into Engadget, with Joystiq being a "separate channel".

Techcrunch said:
While Verge earlier today reported that both tech blogs were being closed, this is not quite accurate: Joystiq will stay on as a separate channel at Engadget, while TUAW content will be folded into the bigger site, we understand. It’s still being decided whether the two brand names will remain. (Update: I’m sad to add that the Joystiq closure appears to be official now and many are out of a job.)

I've never understood how "professional gaming blogs" could be self-sustained ... ad revenue doesn't get you shit, and these sites don't have premium memberships (not that I'm aware of)

I guess the answer is - they can't, and now this is happening
