Hacking A friend of mine has a problem

Hi, a friend of mine tried Mario Kart wii and the wii asks to update (I used the same disk with him I always play on).
I didn't got that and my firmware is the latest 3.1E he has never updated his wii before and bought it a few weeks after the release.

He has a PAL wii (never updated before) and I don't know what modchip he has.
Is it safe to update?

yes, it's safe to run the mario kart update. If it's a PAL disc of course.

That's the problem he bought it a few weeks after the release just when there were a few modchips.
So he can have wiikey or wiinja of something like that.

But if he updates then there is no risk of not be able to play back-ups?

The update will cause no harm to the modchip itself.
But Mario Kart does contain the 001 copy protection, so the modchip must be up to date.

That's coverd cuz i downloaded a patched version.
Even the channel bug is fixed and i didn't need to do anything
