I'm not totally sure if this is a legit source, but a retailer is claiming that Gust's original PlayStation Vita title Surge Concerto is being designed with paid monthly downloads in mind.
Buy the game's main release (which will be offered in package and download form), and you'll get just the first chapter. Additional chapters will be distributed monthly, priced ¥500 each.
This may not be as bad as it sounds, as the first chapter is said to offer over one month play time. The retailer is not sure about the length of the subsequent chapters.
Gust apparently intends to build up the game in this fashion for over one year. There are also apparently some plans for a possible PlayStation 3 version, and for the two versions to link up.
This information was apparently distributed to retailers by Gust. We'll hopefully get some form of confirmation with this week's Dengeki or Famitsu.
Surge Concerto is a simulation game where you interact with Ion, a girl who's lost her memory. She exists in a world on the other side of your PlayStation Vita screen.
A retail leak from Amazon last week revealed that Ion exists in her own twenty-four hour time cycle. Depending on when you access the game, you'll see her eating, sleeping, or taking a bath. She may not respond to you when you call out to her. However, as your relationship deepens, Ion will come to match your lifestyle rhythm.
Outside of the downloadable chapters, it seems that Gust is leaving open the possibility of download items. The game's first print run will include a serial code for downloading customize clothing and accessories for Ion.

This is bad and it will only get worse, that makes 3 Vita games that are incomplete (Ridge Racer and Samurai and Dragons are the other two), a month of gameplay is no excuse, when you make a game, make it complete in the cart or digital download, none of this stuff. No game is safe from this unethical and greedy practice anymore. Your favorite game will be next and it's not a question of how it will be implemented but when.

What has Sony got to do with this?

I'm actually not completely against this, as long as I know from the beginning what I'm paying. Telltale games release in parts too, and you can just download a new episode every month. In that case, you pay up front though.

Hasn't been anounced yet, but chances are it's 3980 yen ($52), the other two are also 3980 yen for the carts (However Samurai and Dragons is free via Digital Download and avaliable one month earlier than retail).

I do not like this one bit. Just because it claims to offer a month of gameplay time does not mean that chunk will deliver. In fact, that may be an estimate for the people who only play their Vita a few hours per day. How about people who can happily plow through the average game with a free Saturday/Weekend?

I doubt they'll be able to complete this in less than a month unless they are an expert visual novel player and even then they'll have their hands full because it sems to be a very complex game, but you have a valid point when it comes to future games, as not all games will have this magnetude of gameplay.

That is a good point to consider as well. It just tends to feel like game companies are trying to milk every cent they can from consumers while delivering half-done games or pure crap.

So, $50 for a full game's worth of content, and ~$6 for (what could possibly be another full game's worth of) DLC every month. All things considered, I'd be very okay with that. I'd be much more okay with waiting for the GotY edition, like I do most games that I know will have lots of DLC.

I doubt the localized version will have everything in it on the cart or DD, it'll be the same most likely that's if it ever gets localized as it's more of an adventure game.

It's a Gust game...can't say that many people will be that bothered once it gets reviewed. Atelier Iris and Ar Tonelico were "ok" but Gust aren't exactly the bleeding edge of great game design.

I'm guessing this will do more damage to Gust's fortunes than the Vita's.

Sony is failing + developers are getting too greedy and are marketing half done games to the public and forcing us to pay to beat the game.
