You'll need to dump the DVD Keys of the DVD Drive.
Dumping the keys depends on your drive and is not possible on some Slim drives (correct me if I'm wrong)

You can optionally buy a second hand 360 Elite from 2010.
Those are guaranteed to work.

o.k. so elites are 100% , and in your opinion dumping the key on some slims drives does not work , (anyone else want to confirm or deny that ? )
so do you know on what slims those are ? like is there a name for those drives them and can i spot them by the disk tray ?

360s Slim with an Hitachi 0500 0502 drive aren't dumpable iirc.

Any other Slim is dumpable.
If you get a older Slim with a Trinity motherboard (135W PSU 10.83A) is most likely to have an dumpable Liteon drive.

If you'd buy one from a game store it's highly likely to be a Corona motherboard with an Hitachi drive.

Yes.

Guaranteed as Slim Liteons are even writable (provided you did the Sputnik or Kamikaze winbond hack) with a LT+ 3.0 in the making.

You only need to read out the DVD keys of the Liteon, which is the first step into flashing a drive.
You only need to dump your keys tho.

guess i will have to go 2nd hand shopping then for either a liteon slim or just an elite, so other then the disk tray,
are there any other ways to tell ? or stuff i should look out for when buying one?

There is no solid way of telling the DVD drive inside a Slim.

An early Slim is guaranteed to have a Liteon drive.
As well as a Phat box.
(be sure to pick up a 360 Phat with a powerbrick rated at 150watts)

sounds like safest bet is to get an elite

Yep.

Get a 150watt model.
It's bound to be a Jasper or an Kronos revision.
These won't RRoD as fast as a Falcon/Opus/Zephyr/Xenon.

And since you're opening the 360 to install the ODDE it's also a good opportunity to dust out the console.

hmm another thing , i am guessing this is not possible , but might as well ask ,
if i did go and buy a slim and it was a hitachi drive , could i not just swap it out for the lite-on ones ?
or would there be more to it then that ?

Yes and no.

Yes because you could theoretically spoof the Liteon to a Hitachi.
No because it WILL get you banned from XBLive.

Hmm really , well i should have said i dont plan on using this on xb live , this is a purely to play back ups of my games.
so would that method work with the x3y ? like if swap out the drives and install the key , it should be good to go ?

Afaik it isn't possible to spoof a Liteon to a Hitachi.

Just get a early Slim model (glossy black) or a 360 Phat, dump the keys and install the Xk3y.
It's the easiest way + the safest way to do it.

yea sounds like thats by far the best thing to do , and do that mean all glossy black slims (since they dont make them any more ) should be liteon drive ?
