GUIDE UPDATED JULY 14, 2011, 12:02AM EST

PLEASE! Read through this guide thoroughly before performing, this will cause less confusion.

Complete Setup Guide

What's XBConnect?

  • XBConnect is a tunneling program that will (long story short) carry a system link connection between servers, so basically it's "System Link Online." This program is starting to grow slowly in popularity ever since Microsoft shut down LIVE for Xbox Originals, while thousands of people still played Halo 2 daily... Those poor fellows...

So what you're saying is...?
  • You will be able to play Halo 1/2 (And any other Xbox/360 title) Online without the LIVE service getting in the way!

So let's get started!

First off, you need the following things.
  • Xbox Console (X360 will work too, wireless works with Originals on a 360 Console)
  • PC
  • Internet Connection

Methods of Internet Connection

Click HERE for multiple ways to Wirelessly connect your Xbox properly.
Credit for link goes to XBConnect staff member Dustin Westaby.

If everything is wired on your part, you don't need to go to the link above.

How to Bridge your connection (If needed)

How to Create A Connection Bridge For Xbox Live

Moving on...

Now that you have your Xbox and PC are on a shared internet connection, let's get started!

First, go online and download the following things, INSTALL IN THIS ORDER!

Okay! Now that they're installed, go to XBConnect, the first time you run it, they will ask you to make an account, which is free. So go ahead and do that!

Once you are logged in, it will look like this.

Next, you need XBConnect to detect your console. So you will want to do the following steps, which will be located in the spoiler below.

Finding Your Console

You're console was detected! Now, click OK, then find a server and double click it, a new windows will pop up like this.

Once you have done that, games should start popping up on your screen, just select one and you should be in! If you play Halo 1, there is a pretty decent chance that the game will fail to let you join in, because Halo 1 was never meant to go online, thus, isn't very stable on XBConnect, but when you get in, it's hella fun! smile.gif

Have fun!!

So it only works for Xbox games?

Not 360?

Oops, yes, it does work for 360 titles, look at the game list on the XBConnect menu, games will have either a (360) tag at the end, for example, Borderlands(360), or you can definitely tell that it's a 360 title. I'll edit right away.

Can you play halo 2 online using this? Also would i need a crossover cable to connect my xbox to my laptop? And would this work on soft-modded xbox?

A Crossover cable? I'm not absolutely sure if it's NEEDED, but I know they work, normal Ethernet cables should work just fine, yes, softmodded Xboxes WILL work, and yes, you will be able to play Halo 2 online with this! Remember, it's an online system link, so you do not select Xbox Live on the main menu, you select System Link.

If there are more questions on the way, I'll wait and gather them and turn them into an FAQ sometime during the week.

EDIT: Speaking of softmodders, if you own any of those bigger Halo 2 mods such as Halo 2 CE, those are officially supported by XBConnect. Just check the game list on the left to see if the game you want to play is compatible.

Was your console game "Trying to find a game"? Some games will automatically time out after one second, so you would have to keep hitting the game's refresh button until it's found. Doom 3 is one of them. Are you connected with the bridged method? On your Xbox, change to manual IP instead of auto, and use 192.168.2.XXX, XXX is any number between 20 and 100. Make the Subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and the gateway is the IP you enter in your browser to edit your router's settings, you can find that by going to the MS Command Prompt and typing ipconfig /all, then change the DNS to manual as well and you will be using a free public DNS server so this is perfectly safe for me to give away, make the Primary Server 208.67.222.222 and the Secondary 208.67.220.220. Now try it.

EDIT: I think these settings are available on the UnleashedX Dashboard on soft modded Xbox systems. I don't remember exactly though, it's been maybe 5 years since I've had my Original Xbox, I use a 360 now.

Sorry for the bump and double post, but I put a pretty decent update to this guide, which can solve a few problems that some people have been having. Good luck!

I will post a video most likely much later in the morning, after I get some sleep...

Great thread. I never really got into xbox live much, but used to watch my friends play halo all the time.
I got xbmc on my original xbox and use that quite a bit. Its good to know you can still play certain games online.
Keeps the original xbox fun still. I wouldnt mind finding a few extras and putting on xbmc on them. Have a few around the house.
