A remaster of a title, that came out on Arcades first and PS3 later, now with more content and more features on PS4 & PC.
I'm gonna be honest, I suck at fighting games. Which is why I was surprised how easy it is to get into this game.
This is one of those "against all odds" situations where the in-game tutorial is a wall of text that nobody is gonna read and the game is reviewed by someone who's only had experienced the genre through Smash Brothers and Killer Instinct.
But even though the Tutorial itself is bad, the way the game presents all the necessary information lets you learn the game at a very fast pace. The game has 2 columns on the left and right with all the Special moves for the two fighters.
Forgot the button combination for a special move? Just look to the side for a second and you're good to go. Once you learn all the moves inside out then you can simply turn that feature off and enjoy a wider screen resolution.

Short glance at the side of the screen allow you to quickly remember how to use the special moves.

The game offers a lot of modes to sink your time into. Arcade Mode, which is basically story mode, where you fight a half dozen enemies in a row and depending on your performance you get one of two endings, which means there is an incentive to go back and play the arcade mode with the same character again.
Versus & Network Mode, which is your local & online multiplayer mode respectively.
Survival mode, which makes you fight every character in the game giving you a huge amount of currency if you succeed in it.
Practice mode, which should be self explanatory. Testing characters here helps you learn combos faster.
Mission mode, which are regular battles but with extra rules like "only basic attacks deal damage" or "only special attacks deal damage".
Score attack mode, which determines who won a round depending on the score.

Gameplay wise the game is fast and responsive. You have your standard four button setup, each button for Light, Medium & Heavy Kick and Punch. The shoulder buttons on the controller are button combinations which end up being blocking, dodging and grabing. The entry point in this game is low but the skill ceiling is high. Experienced players will be able to block or even outright cancel special moves entirely which minimizes the damage received.
At the beginning of the battle, each fighter has four special moves from which you can chose two from, as well as the type of dash you want. There are also weaker/stronger variations of the characters to chose from, for example the boss and ex versions, which allow you to set up additional handicaps if you want to. Basically the game lets you customize a lot of things.
Speaking of customization, a feature that I did particularly enjoy is that you can customize all the colors of a fighter to your liking, making the color variations a little bit more unique.
Playing through literally anything gives you currency and with it you can unlock various things like additional colors for the fighter customization, additional endings for the characters, if you're too bad to unlock them, boss versions of characters and titles for online play.
The story mode does the job done but isn't particularly exiting. It introduces the fighters and gives a brief explanation as to why they're fighting but any sort of deep characterization just isn't there. The fighters have different starting animations depending on which fighter you fight against however they're not dubbed in English and you don't understand what they're saying since there are no subtitles either. I think a little bit of characterization is being lost here.

Original color palette versus customized one

The PC port isn't the greatest. It's certainly serviceable but there are a few quirks here and there. The most important one would be that the game looks very pixelated in certain spots. I'm not talking about the fighters or stages as this pixelation is part of the aesthetic. I'm talking about stuff like menus or user interface. Even with AA 4x on the game didn't look that great on a monitor with higher resolution than 720p. There is also no mouse support which isn't the end of the world but it would make traversing through the main menu a lot faster. Also certain buttons in menus have really weird functions like R3 (Heavy Kick) being the cancel button. You can certainly tell that this was originally an arcade title.

Overall

It is a very easy to pick up fighting game with a high skill ceiling and lots of replay value. For a 20€ package it has everything a fighting game needs to have. The Anime aesthetic might be right up your alley or not, that is for you to decide.
I was gonna get this game, but i'm not paying $20 for it so wait for a sale i will. :)

Though i still feel like the ps3 game should have had more updates to least online mode support but waited until new game like this to try and make money off of especially when they did what? Added 2 characters, color mod edit, some extra modes and the one most important thing that was missing, ONLINE? O_O

Discount please playstation. :creep:

Oh yes, I was really shocked about PS3 version missing Online play too.
Then again it does kinda explain why I never heard of the game before.^_^

I love how the animu aesthetic is a downside and an upside. So is this fighting system closer than the original streetfighters rather than what you see in MVC3 and Blazblue/Guilty Gear?

Of course it's both an upside and downside.
Some people will see a schoolgirl, who's an android, shooting rockets out of her bottom, and say "that's amazing" but then there are those who really dislike that kind of stuff because it's a weeb thing or something.
And yes it does feel more streetfighter-ish but then again I'm not a fighting game expert so take that with a grain of salt. ;)

I am a fighting game expert. I shall shed some light. :creep:

*Ahem* This game, based on what i played of the ps3, it is less like a street fighter game, and perhaps neither like blazblue/guilty gear, the thing about this game that sets it apart from street fighter is the buttons, in street fighter is a 6 button game, 3 punches and kicks, this is 4 button like most neo geo snk games, 2 punch and kick, with multiple combinations to do multiple actions, so is probably more like KOF games than blazblue or guilty gear. Don't be fooled cause is published by arc system works who make the two games, is developed by FK Digital. This game has 2 punches and kicks each, 2 buttons required to throw, dodge, activate various commands including more powerful specials and super combos known as ex attacks, it also has normal cancels and super cancels to detail this.

Combo formula is kinda like marvel vs capcom, normal attacks then special or super. Weak>strong>special>super in that order. So combo potential is very decent, though the only trouble you may find in this is lack of a launcher move to catapult the enemy into the air or proper juggle physics to extend combos, most of the time is just grounded combos with some air combo potential. Though there is kinda like specific attacks with juggle properties, is not very much.

The unique thing about this game is that before each battle you have a option to select a run or dash movement, then up to two extra special moves out of 4 choices for the character, 2 are normal specials and 2 are super combo specials. (All character have more special but for some reason you have a choice of 2 extra) every character has a high damage all meter consuming ultimate overdrive special. If you played a KOF game before, it should be easy to play this game.:yayps3:

Anyway as for the presentation, is basically used 2d sprites that look like anime, so while it may not look as appealing as guilty gear xrd with that unreal engine or the blazblue with more detailed background stages or sprites that move a breath life, is a basic presentation of a anime fighter. Though no presentation can compare to skull girls in 2D art sprite for is over 1000 frames of animation for each character record. :P

Remember, this was a budget game, is $12 on ps3 for the basic game and the updated one is $20 on ps4 and pc, while games like skull girls is $25 and you can tell the difference in detail by the size comparison of the download required data storage. Is not a game sold at retail so don't expect the quality of Mortal kommbat XL or street fighter or another. Skull girls was made possible by indiegogo pledges of community unlike this chaos code games.B-)

But don't judge a fighting game based on how it looks and presentation, the important part is gameplay, what it offers, what makes it different from other popular ones and what makes you wanna buy it over other. That is important in the situation, not the "weeb" anime looking judgements. Yes somethings about the fighting game genre is a bit strange to western audiences but is a matter of opinion really, presentation is the bait for gamers to buy it, the game play is what keeps them engaged. :)

Nice reveiw. Looks like I'll get this on PC.

Sorry my post was long but i felt enough detail to make a better observation of the game compared to other fighters was important. This is a fighting game with common things and new unique things, so that basically what it is. The only thing like @XrosBlader821 Said, is how is presented.

The anime graphics are not appealing to many western players, as well as the character trope fandom compared to more realistic games like street fighter and mortal kombat. So most anime games don't do well in international countries, but i lived on anime and used to the idea, but if every anime game looked like guilty gear xrd then i be happy, that unreal engine was used very well compared to other games on the market. :)

So if you play this game get used to "Emo doll loving hikaru, sexy ninja chick kagura, super anime iron chef bravo, fan service hermies, gothic lolita android (See pic in review above :creep:) and other such characters in the game. If anyone is interested, there is a game called waku waku 7 on neo geo, that is basically a parody of various popular anime shows during that time in the 1990s that all characters are based off, so before you judge the game for being too anime, look up waku waku 7, Now available on switch. PRODUCED BY SUNSOFT! :yayswitch:

Dont mind the animu unless it's excessive fanservice. If it's closer to KOF I'm all for it, and will probably pick it up as well to play in short bursts unless I get heavily into it.

People probably play these games in short burst, mostly cause there too many fighting games anyway. :P
