@Voxel , @Tom Bombadildo , or anyone else. I did a little research, and I found something about needing the dex version of the package installer. is this true? and, do I need the dex version of shell.self to use it? I remember using the dex version of cma without the shell.self (dex version), and it was incredibly unstable. the shell.self isn't even mentioned with this.

If you can find the DEX version of NPXS10031 application, you just have to replace its content in "vs0:/app" using VitaRW (do not touch something else, especially os0 partition!). There is no need to change "shell.self".
Once it is done, you should add a custom bubble by editing "app.db".
See the following link (in French): http://www.customprotocol.com/underground/package-installer-1-0-revient-3-60/

However, the DEX version has some limitations when the PKG needs some DRM. To avoid those limitations, the only way is to keep CEX version and it could be started using IDU mode (but you should definitly stay away from this mode, mistakes could be done really easily).
The last solution which could probably avoid the DRM issue would, maybe, be the decrypted and patched CEX version but I do not find the link because it was done by MajorTom who delete all his Vita stuff on the web, here is a trace of the usage:

By curiosity, with tools like NPS Browser and LIve Area refresh (from VitaShell), is there any advantage of being able to install PKG files on the PS Vita?

yeah, I know about the dangers of IDU/kiosk mode such as the silent updates. with the henkaku dns, you can freely change to it without worrying. the 5 minute time limit makes most things impossible. I know you can bypass and unlock the system with a button combination, then plug the controller in to remove that restriction. this is a non-issue with the pstv since it's always plugged in.

in IDU mode, you have to use uri caller to call the package installer. this is in my latest vita tutorial. is uri caller needed with a dex version of the package installer? I've done the bubble thing on 3.20, so I don't have a problem with that. this was before henkaku, on 3.20. uri caller works on henkaku though even though sony blocked the package installer. this is with the cex version. is uri caller necessary with the dex version of package installer? it may not be worth it though. a rebuild of the database will remove the package installer bubble. I do have a backup of my app.db though, so that's not much of an issue. using the package installer just with nonpdrm is sort of a waste. I did this with a demo game when adrenaline needed one. evil lord (half-minute hero) was the smallest demo I could find at about 7MBs. :P with that being said, it's probably not worth it then. pkgi can seemingly use the package installer. well, I don't know how it's decrypting sony's links. it seems to decrypt and install the games in real time file-by-file before the package is done downloading. how is that even possible?
