PS4 now has a public backup loader for FW 4.05

The PlayStation 4 scene has been incredibly active lately, with new homebrew announcements and projects being constantly teased. Now, less than a week after the release of the PS4 homebrew loader, PS4HEN, there's something big that will most certainly grab people's attention; the public release of a backup loader for PlayStation 4 systems that are on firmware version 4.05. The method to using backups is quite similar to how one enables homebrew on PS4HEN, which you can read more about here. Run the kernal exploit, inject the payload, put the pkg file onto a USB drive, disable your internet connection to your PS4, and install via the package installer. This will allow people to load backups of their games, so long as they are decrypted, and run through a tool called PKG Kitchen, which turns the game into a pkg file, that in turn, allows you to install it to your PS4. This is not an end-all-be-all tool, however, as only games that are on firmware 4.05 or less will work, meaning most games from 2017 and beyond will not work. For reference, Gravity Rush 2 is the last 4.05 title, and launched at the very start of 2017.

oh, how history repeats itself... its 7th gen all over again the two big consoles finally starting to break down because of homebrew... and how ironic is it that I just spent 85$ for ps2 stuff the same day Chary writes this article!

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I read recently they have exploit working up to 5.01, and presumably 5.03 if it wasn't patched. There's video out there showing pkg loader on 5.01.
there are way to add a big 3.5 inch drive to your PS

...and you keep a hax compatible PS4 boxed then for what? Just waiting for PS4 homebrew to explode?
ill wait until i can drop a disc in the system and rip/convert to .pkg or whatever to back it up without extra needed tools on a pc. a ps4 webman/multiman. i dont plan on downloading 10-50gb isos or .pkgs. redbox is perfect. was great when ps3 games were still comming out on a semi weekly basis.

Aww my PS4 Pro came with 4.07 from the get go so I was never in luck. Oh well, I'm on 5.X anyway since a HDR issue I needed to troubleshoot. Got to hope for another version for the later firmwares then.

you sound like a nice person and all but I just think this way is no bueno. Like sure you would want webman/multiman but since you don't stay up to date you are not aware you can in fact just drop a disc and rip to usb. Which is great progress. This was just accomplished. I find those like yourself deny yourself cool experiences. Being on the ground break you learn cool skills. If I did what you did in terms of switch I would have never taught myself how to host a http server for example just my two cents.

eh i know what you mean, and i was like that with the psp, ps3 and psvita. the psp scene was really what opened my eyes to learning the innerworkings of a system, its file trees ect. and to use a hex editor to manually rewrite "fs:/0" to ms:/0 to make a custom hybrid firmware load from a memstick. the ps3 i had a teensy usb micro controller to emulate the original PSJailbreak dongle, vita i just gave up waiting on no news, 3ds i bought cubic ninja the week the exploit was announced. ps4 its been boring, so now i just wait till everything is tested debugged and refined before i hack. the 3ds i never did a a9lh i just left it on 8.1.0 fw for a few years and then b9s and fill it with games i always wanted to play. the older i get the less time i want to invest in researching, and just want shit to work with the least amount of steps involved. some may see it as lazy, i just dont have the same edgy enthusiasm to think its "cool" to be on the bleeding edge of a hacking scene. especially when things evolve and things become obsolete. like psjailbreak and a9lh or 1.76 fw

well said. I too learned on psp. But you were prob far more advanced than i. Psp taught me basics like partitions and files properties ftp etc. I like to keep learning and keep sharp. But when all the jewels and gold have lost their luster. It gets hard. I get that.

I still get goosebumps. For me these are the days...

to remember...

i at one time was "friends" with some awsome people high up in the ps3 scene.

i was super intrigued with the blu ray emulator within ps3 debug fw and in the ps3 1.80-1.81 fw times i actually managed to come up with a hot swap method to trick a retail ps3 into installing and running a leaked debug 1.81 .pup fw update. i felt like i had achived something magical, but the debug options didnt actually work do to lack of QA flag and a token. so it was all in vein, or so i thought. i was too afraid of big corperate sony to post it publicly so i shared my method with a guy named vistaman5000 and he published the hack but got a ton of flack becuase he wasnt very clear on certian steps and timing witch resulted with bricks, and those successfull were stuck on a debug fw that woudnt accept newer debug fw or retail fw or even work properly. those were exciting days.

but here is my issue, ever since Indy developers becoming a sustainable carrear there is little to no incentive for original homebrew to be developed for security broken consoles. psp seemed like the end of a era as smartphone apps took over. now there is never retail game level homebrew games.

that's wild. I once did a true hd hot swap on the original xbox. Nothing cool like you. I felt like so cool. I remember "vistaman5000" that's amazing to hear the backstory after all these years. Psp was truly something. But my vita is close! But back then I would mod peoples psps and play adhoc mame n neogeo. It was so dang cool.
