YO ladys and gents
I've been neglecting my hacking for some time now so heres my question you guys surely long to answer:
currently im using gateway and run cias via emunand
due to some weird bug my installed cias wont show on the ds homescreen so im running everything via big blue menu
now what id like to do is switch to cfw since, as far as i undestand,
im no longer able to use online modes and dlc with gateway due to the firmware (update) restriction
what im wondring about, is whether i can keep my old cias and most importantly saves when i get a cfw or not
also i wouldnt say no to anybody pointing me to a good guide on how to install cfw/ which cfw to use for a old 3Ds with gateway emunand (never worked with cfw on 3ds so im totally clueless)

The guide to follow is 3ds.guide (follow it while in sysnand). It has the move emunand section in the finalizing setup part, but I'm not sure if it works for gateway emunand.
If you want to test you can backup your saves with Checkpoint or JKSM and follow the guide including the move emunand section. If it works you'll have your old cias and saves ready to go, if it doesn't you just need to reinstall the cias and restore saves with Checkpoint or JKSM.
You can also wait for someone who knows more about gateway to give a better answer.

Formatting the system will not remove of hacks. You need to look at https://3ds.guide/uninstall-cfw to remove of the hacks for your system
Okay, so while I was doing CTRtransfer I got an error code that said "No valid Destination" I'm currently on my sysnand with this file 171016_UNKNOWNXXX_sysnand_000 and I don't know how to bypass that error. Plus, there multiple symbol writing above the error.

What exactly are you trying to do on your console when you notice these crashes? Also, are you using eshop or freeshop when trying to do the updates when you get crashes from there?
Alright, so I have a r4i 3ds gold plus flashcart, and I flashed the flashcart without thinking. Is there anyway to restore it? or is it lost forever?

If you get a .cia file instead of getting the game from the freeshop or eshop, will the .cia recieve update notices for the game like every other app in order for it to update?
Yes it will. But if the .cia is not found in your region's eShop, you'll have to find the update .cia or use freeShop (if the update exists there) to update the game.
So I'm fully softmodded and want to play some DS games via flash cart. What's everyone's suggestion for a modern ds flashcart? I've been messing around with TWLoader and I don't really see any recommended cards, just ones that are nominally supported.
I was looking at the R4i gold 3ds RTS but I wanted to make sure it was working properly with TWLoader. I've stumbled across a couple posts like this https://www.reddit.com/r/3dshacks/comments/6h7tuv/guide_improved_twloader_5x_guide_for_r4i_gold_3ds/ that are out of date so I just wanted to make sure that no one screamed don't buy it when I mentioned TWLoader

Probably a stupid question, but how do you copy larger ROMs over to a system? Got my 3ds working via an R4 BS9, but the only file system that the 3ds recognized was fat32. Problem is that, with that, larger ROMs (like xenoblade or bravely default) aren't allowed to be transferred on. Is there something I'm missing/some way of getting things to work with an NTFS card?
